Are you tired of comics and manga full of catastrophic events, imminent doom or plot lines that are just intense all the time? The world is already pretty overwhelming right now, so why not kick back with a more light-hearted comic or manga? Sure, there are still challenges and tough moments, but at least the earth isn't exploding due to a super villain brawl. Here are a few of my favorite recent reads to get you started.
In Ghosted in L.A, Daphne Walters moves to Los Angeles with her boyfriend Ronnie to start college. Shortly after moving, Ronnie breaks up with Daphne and she finds herself alone. Making new friends isn’t as easy as Daphne thought and her roommate isn’t very fun to be around, so Daphne decides to explore the city herself. While exploring the city solo, Daphne stumbles across a glamourous mansion filled with ghostly residents who let her move in as their new roommate.
The Magic Fish weaves folk tales with personal connections between Tiến, his friends and family. The coloration is unique and the drawings of the folk tales Tiến reads with his mother are captivating and imaginative. This is definitely one of those slice-of-life books that runs high on emotions at times, especially the pain and anxiety Tiến experiences as he explores his identity. Don’t let that stop you from picking up this amazing book.
What’s better than a sassy cat? Not too much really, especially if it is a manga filled with sassy cat antics like A Man & His Cat. This book is the first in a series about a cat who named Fukumaru, who is not cute at all, and his new owner Kanda. The dialog is from both the cat and the owner’s perspective as this unlikely couple get to know each other. This manga is well-balanced with the sassiness of the cat and the mellow qualities of the first-time pet owner Kanda and it will likely make you laugh out loud too. Even if you aren’t usually a fan of manga, definitely give this title a chance.
