“X” Means More: The Edgewater Community Quilt

To Chicago artist Sarah Nishiura, an x means more than a signature for those who cannot write, "the x has often been used as a symbolic mark of agreement and solidarity," she explains in the beginning of her artist's statement.

Many people from our schools and neighborhood contributed with their own embroidered "x" to the quilt she created for the Edgewater Branch. There were many different sizes and styles of sewing, and this also represents the individuality of our neighborhood residents.  Each x is sewn into a circular shape that symbolizes the inclusion the library hopes to achieve.

Her finished piece, "The Edgewater Community Quilt," hangs on the 2nd floor, next to the Community Room. This lovely framed piece is 63" by 73", constructed from new and recycled cotton, and makes another exciting addition to our public art collection!
