Opportunity for Education, 2014

I like Chicago because it knows that education is the best thing a parent can give as an inheritance to their children. How you think, behave or speak reflects the extent of your education.

Chicago gives the opportunity to anyone who wants to improve his education. There are free ESL classes for English learners and GED for the students who did not have a chance to graduate from high school.

I am taking GED classes and I am so happy to be here. I left school 30 years ago. In my country I would not have the chance to go back to school because of the people around me who think adults do not deserve an education. They would say things like, “What were you doing when you were young?” “You don’t want to get old, right?” “Why don’t you let children go to school?”

Other things I like about this city are the public library and public transportation. You can go everywhere you want by bus or train. You just need your bus card. You can even rent a motorcycle or even a bicycle if you like.

So there is no excuse to give up on your education. Never stop learning!

In the online exhibit Picturing a New Life in Chicago, people who were forced to flee their home countries because of war, persecution or violence share photos and inspiring stories about adjusting to a new life here. Some of the photographers came to Chicago through a refugee resettlement program. Others sought political asylum. Learn more in Online Exhibit: Forced Migration Photovoice Project.
