One Book, One Chicago in 2013

Since late last spring, CPL has explored the theme of migration through the expanded One Book, One Chicago program. We’ve asked Chicagoans to join us in thinking about how Chicago has been shaped by the people who make their home here, and how our city continues to be a destination for 21st century migrants.

  • We've recorded our patrons’ stories of migration through our partnership with StoryCorps @ your library.
  • Countless patrons have read and discussed Isabel Wilkerson’s landmark book The Warmth of Other Suns.
  • Through various programs we've heard from scholars Adam Green, Jennifer Brier, James Grossman, Timuel Black and others about everything from the significance of the African American migration to the importance of sharing stories in understanding our history.
  • We hosted Isabel Wilkerson in our Winter Garden at the Harold Washington Library Center to a capacity crowd of enthusiastic and diverse readers.
  • We welcomed artist Favianna Rodriguez to town to discuss her work integrating immigrant activism into art with a group of teens in YOUmedia; and much more.

And we’re not done yet! We look forward to many events through March, including historian David M. Kennedy at 6 p.m. December 12 at the Harold Washington Library Center. Find the latest news on our website over the next four months.

We owe thanks to our many partners and to our sponsors BMO Harris and Allstate, whose support through the Chicago Public Library Foundation makes all of our programs possible.

Thanks as well to the readers, thinkers and makers who support our programs through their involvement and interest!
