A new collection of books for adult learners is available to borrow through the Reading Set. The Adult Learners Reading Set collection has 34 titles with 5-12 copies that are available for book clubs or discussion groups to borrow. This collection has short reads that are great for English language learners, adult new readers, and adult literacy groups. The books are leveled according to the complexity of the vocabulary and the length of the books. Each title has a link to additional teaching resources associated with the book. These books are a great choice for ELL, ABE, or adult literacy instructors to use with their students. The collection includes contemporary, classic, and other fiction along with some nonfiction titles.
To borrow a set of books, please log into the Reading Set page with your library card number and PIN (usually your ZIP code). Then click on "The Reading Sets" in the upper left. You will see the "Adult Learners Collection" as an option to select on the left-hand menu. You may also search by levels 1-5. The collection includes a few "quick starters" that are pre-level 1 and a few bilingual texts in English and Spanish. Click on the title of the book to find more information about it including the ELL or CASAS level, summary, and teaching resources.
Choose the title you want and click "check availability." A calendar will appear where you can select the dates you want to borrow the set of books and the library where you want to pick up your books. The set of books will come in a book bag. The person who reserved the books will check out and return the books as a set. For more information about the Reading Set process, please visit this FAQ page.
