Super Girls in New Teen Comics

Summer is here, and superhero movies are back! Supergirl kicks things off this weekend, and we could not be more excited. And what better way to prep than to read some of the best new comics the library has to offer? This time, I got a roundup of some of the best super girls in DC, Marvel, and the indie titles.

Starting off with DC, and the reason for this blog, we got two new Supergirl comics that dive into not only who she is, but also why she fights to protect those around her. If you are looking for an authentic and deep look at Supergirl and the responsibility she carries, check out Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. If you're looking for something lighter with some comedy (and a furry friend or two), check out Supergirl Vol. 1: Misadventures in Midvale. Both of these comics not only highlight Supergirl and her talents, but also the many strong women she surrounds herself with.

Staying in the DC universe, we also have a familiar character in an unfamiliar setting in Absolute Wonder Woman. This comic takes our beloved Diana of Themyscira and places her in hell rather than paradise from her childhood. Though she fights for the same reasons, being raised by a fearsome witch means Diana has some new tricks up her sleeve and maybe some curses too.

Moving over to Marvel, while it's hard to find an equivalent to Supergirl, Captain Marvel comes pretty close. Though their powers may differ, their strength and purpose are quite similar, always inspiring young girls to follow in their footsteps. Just like one of her most recent comics, Captain Marvel Vol. 1: The Omen, also brings in a super smart college student who happens to steal magical items to pay off her college debt. The two couldn't be more different, but they find a way to work together.

Supergirl isn't the only one living in the shadow of a popular hero. Marvel's X-23 can relate pretty well being the young clone/daughter of Wolverine. In her comic X-23: Deadly Regenesis, X finds herself battling expectations and haunted by her violent past. We also get to see what makes her super – her courage to heal.

If you're over Marvel and DC or just don't want to catch up on years of lore, these next comics are for you. First, there's Family Force V, which follows Maise, a teen girl just trying to get through school and go out with her crush, but her family has a legacy to uphold. That legacy is keeping the world safe from alien kaiju, and they happen to show up at the worst possible moment every time.

Finally, there's Latina Superheroes Volumes 1 and 2. Each volume tells the story of two strong Latina women who do what they can to make a difference for their families and neighbors. Sometimes, that’s using dance skills to fight effortlessly against men kidnapping women. Other times, it's harnessing a new ability to get ahead of those trying to keep them silenced. Future volumes will start weaving together the stories of each character, so now is the time to start reading.
