Books Celebrating Queer Latinx Identity

Pride Month is a time of celebration, of coming together as one queer community of all cultures and ethnicities. But for people of color, sexuality intersects with ethnic cultures in a distinct and important way.

These titles celebrate our queer Latinx family and honor the unique stories they have to tell.

From Macho to Mariposa, edited by Charles RiceGonzáles and Charlie Vásquez, is a love letter to a new generation of gay Latinos. In turns beautiful, heart-wrenching, raw and real, this anthology gives voice to the experiences and struggle of building bridges between two cultures in a world that is reticent to honor either of them.

Chicana Lesbians, edited by Carla Trujilo, on the other hand, raises up the voices of queer Latinas. Subtitled The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About, this anthology is a dictionary, a guidebook, a presentation of the world that is and that could be through the eyes of our lesbian Latina sisters.

Juliet Takes A Breath by Gabby Rivera follows a girl in her 20s as she tries to figure out this whole "Puerto Rican lesbian" thing by moving to Portland and interning with the author of her favorite book. Juliet's story is moving and relatable whether you are also just starting your adult life, or have decades of experience under your belt.

For a sweet tale of young love with a happily-ever-after, look no further than Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. This heartwarming tale of two Latino teenage boys who find love in the most unexpected place will fill you with the kind of happiness that Pride Month should inspire.
