Back-to-School Picks for Teens

Like it or hate it, back to school is right around the corner. If you're looking to get into school mode, here are some books about teens in high school, and all the drama that goes with it.

Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero chronicles Gabi's senior year of high school through her diary entries. She has a lot to deal with but finds the good amid the bad and tells it all with wit and charm.

The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist who leaves his school on the Spokane Indian Reservation to attend an all-white high school. Junior's drawings appear throughout the book as he tries to find his place in not just one, but two worlds.

As I Descended by Robin Tally is a loose retelling of Shakespeare's Macbeth, but that's not why you should read it. When school power couple Maria and Lily feel that golden child Delilah stands in the way of their goals, they make a terrible choice that plunges the entire school into the kind of chaos that will have you staying up all night to find out what happens.

In The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Charlie writes a series of letters to an unknown recipient detailing his adjustment to high school and the events of his freshman year. He makes friends, makes mistakes and comes to terms with major events from his past in beautiful and utterly real prose.
