I read a lot of awesome books in 2013. Some were heartbreaking while others were inspirational and some were a little bit of both. The authors brought to life characters that I was sad to say goodbye to at the end of the story. Here are a few of my favorites.
Benjamin Alire Sáenz uses magical language to bring Ari and Dante to life in Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe . I love this coming-of-age story because it addresses not only anger in a young boy's life, but also the way friendship and family can change your life if you're willing to look a little deeper.
I came across Dr. Bird's Advice for Sad Poets because it is a 2014 Morris Award Finalist. I'm so glad it came on my radar. It addresses the fact that sometimes teens know they need help, but they just don't know how to get it. James talks to his imaginary therapist, a pigeon named Dr. Bird, to sort out his anxieties and depression. The narrator's voice is authentic, honest, trustworthy and funny.
The First Part Last is an older, yet timeless book. I like how the narrator is a teenage boy who finds out his girlfriend is pregnant. His point of view is refreshing and honest as he deals with the struggles of his new life. It is a quick read and great for someone who wants a realistic point of view.
