Artist Statement

I started drawing in high school in Bloomington, Ill., and later received my master of fine arts at University of Michigan and bachelor of fine arts at University of Illinois. Since then, I developed to work with oil, acrylic, watercolor and painting.

I have been influenced by Asian culture and history as subject matters that express my life experiences. During university, I studied Robert Motherwell and the significance of large canvas and massive brushwork. However, my artwork has been influenced by Claude Monet’s water lily garden series and I have my own interpretation of impressionism.

I also was inspired by a trip in 2018, when I visited the 38th parallel Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) border in South Korea and saw the rusting DMZ train that cannot run through the 38th parallel. For over 68 years, the DMZ divided North and South Korea with no method of communication for both political figures and civilians.

I’m currently working on an exhibition for the Matthaei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the Sixth Silk Road International Exhibition at Xi'an, China.
