Audiobooks for the Busy Reader

One of my fears about becoming a mom last year was that I wouldn't have time to read. As a lifelong bookworm, I couldn't imagine my world without intelligent chick lit, celebrity biographies and historical fiction. Every day I gazed longingly at the piles of unread magazines and growing stacks of overdue library books on the kitchen counter. Yes, even librarians have to pay fines sometimes.

I found a solution: audiobooks. On my walks to work, neighborhood jogs and cleaning binges, I listen to newly discovered classics and inspirational nonfiction. I download MP3 files to my iPhone with the Overdrive App or check out audiobook players from my branch. This way I don't even have to fuss with those so-yesterday things called CDs. The variety of titles available always amazes me. Yes, new and popular titles must be placed on hold. But I mostly use audiobooks to catch up on classics that I've somehow never read.

Currently, I'm listening to 1984 on a handy audiobook player that fits in my coat pocket. Please don't ask me how I missed that one in high school.

Other recent reads reflect my haphazard tastes. Within the past couple of months, I've listened to Veganist, Portrait of a Lady, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and several titles in the Philosophers in 90 Minutes series on my iPhone.

Just because I'm a sleep-deprived mommy doesn't mean that I have to be book-deprived. And that is a huge relief.
