Teen Voices: Featuring Doreyda

Each month we spotlight a teen at CPL.

This month we interviewed Doreyda, a Lozano Branch intern and past summer learning challenge Toman Branch volunteer. Some of her responsibilities included decorating displays and bulletin boards, organizing and other summer learning challenge tasks. Learn about Doreyda's library experiences, hobbies and more!

Q: How has the library been a part of your life?

A: CPL has completely changed my life. I have been a summer reading program participant for as long as I can remember. I became a volunteer when the summer reading program officially became the summer learning challenge, four years ago. When I turned 16 this year, I really wanted to start working and what better place to work than at the place I grew up. This is my first year as an intern and definitely not my last. My internship allowed me to be at a different library, meet new people and enhance my learning experiences. It would be great to one day be able to have visited every library in Chicago.

Q: What’s your favorite program at the library?

A: YOUMedia is definitely my favorite program at Lozano. Not only are there other teens my age that I have befriended, but YOUMedia is a great place to express yourself and have fun. Every week, a group of girls come into the library with a bin filled with nail polish, pens, glue-on nails and nail art in mind and ask me to paint their nails and include the nail art of their choice. It is so much fun, and I look forward to it every week. Besides nail art, activities such as photography/editing, using Silhouette Studio and making watermelon wedges with Perler beads are all great ways to spend time at the library. With Macbooks available, the possibilities are endless.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: Besides reading, I really enjoy art. Making art, studying art, looking at art. I love how stories are told through colors and different mediums. Urban art and Mexican art are my favorites because the colors are so vivid and detailed. Although I spend my summers at the library, I still love to travel and enjoy the outdoors. A simple bike ride or walk always relaxes me and leaves me with a smile on my face. Lastly, I enjoy learning about classic civilizations, especially the Chinese. I’m entering my third year of studying Mandarin.

Q: What’s your favorite book, author and/or genre?

A: My favorite book is every book I’ve read but my current favorite is The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. No book has made me smile so big and cry so much and that is why I love it.

Thanks for all your help and sharing your love of CPL Doreyda!
