Teen Guide to Free Chicago Back-to-School Events

Summer is winding down, which means it's almost time to head back to school. Whether you're shopping for supplies, getting a health checkup, or just looking for a fun way to celebrate the start of a new school year, Chicago has plenty of free community events to help you get ready. Grab your friends or plan this outing for your family and check out these back-to-school events happening across the city.

August 8: Midway Chamber of Commerce Back-to-School Celebration

Kick off the school year at John F. Kennedy High School on Friday, August 8, from 9:00–11:00 a.m. The Midway Chamber of Commerce is giving away free backpacks while supplies last and celebrating the start of another school year with the community.

August 12: Feed the West Side Back to School Event

Join The John Walt Foundation on  on Wednesday, August 12, from 1:00–5:00 p.m. at 1333 N. Laramie Ave. For their annual Back to School BBQ. There will be free groceries, school supplies and backpacks filled with school supplies to start the school year right. You can check their social media for more up to date and updated information.

August 15: Association House of Chicago Back-to-School Fair

Get ready for the school year at the Association House of Chicago's annual Back-to-School Fair on Friday, August 15, from 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Families can receive free school and sports physicals, as well as pediatric vaccines provided in partnership with the Blue Cross Care Van.

August 20: Back to School Jam

Roberto Clemente Community Academy is hosting its Back to School Jam on Thursday, August 20, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The event will feature games, music, a glow up station, and backpacks filled with school supplies (available on a first-come, first-served basis).

August 22: DuSable Museum Back-to-School Celebration

Celebrate the new school year with the DuSable Museum on Friday, August 22, from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. at Washington Park. Enjoy games, music, community resources, and free giveaways while connecting with organizations that support Chicago youth and families.

August 26: Goal Tracking Punch Cards at Chinatown Branch
Join Librarian Sarah to create and decorate your own back-to-school goal tracking punch cards. Head to Chinatown branch on Wednesday, August 25th from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. To create these goal tracking punch cards and set yourself up for success this new school year.  All materials will be provided.
