Exhibit: Words for Decades: Celebrating Poetry at Chicago Public Library

Words for Decades Exhibit: Celebrating Poetry at Chicago Public Library exhibit opens at Logan Square Branch, Richard J. Daley Branch and West Pullman Branch on April 1. This exhibit celebrates National Poetry Month and the 25th anniversary of Poetry Fest. Curated by the Chicago Public Library Poetry Committee and Exhibits Unit at Chicago Public Library, Words for Decades highlights one hundred years of poets, poetry movements, and poetry events in Chicago.

Chicago has long been a center of literary life. From the George Cleveland Hall Branch serving as a meeting space for poets like Gwendolyn Brooks during the Black Chicago Renaissance, to establishing Chicago’s first Poet Laureate, avery r. young, CPL has played a key role in uplifting the legacy of poetry throughout the city. This exhibit covers the invention of slam poetry, the impact of Black poets at the 1940 American Negro Exposition, the history of Poetry Fest and more. Through its archival holdings, CPL continues to make this history available to everyone.
