CPL Provides Copies of Sonia Sotomayor’s New Children’s Book, Starting February 4, to Chicago Kids who Sign up for a Library Card

CPL also hosts Justice Sotomayor for a virtual event in Conversation with Dr. Eve Ewing to discuss her new book

Chicago Public Library (CPL) today announced that CPL will be encouraging children to get a library card by offering free signed copies of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s new children's book in both English - Just Help! How to Build a Better World, opens a new window and Spanish - ¡Solo Ayuda! Como construir un mundo mejor., opens a new window Starting February 4, at select locations, children are eligible to receive a copy of the book while supplies last by showing their library card or signing up for their first card. The book give-away is made possible thanks to generous support from Deloitte to the Chicago Public Library Foundation.

Starting Friday, February 4, books will be available in English and Spanish while supplies last at the following locations:

  • Legler Regional Library
  • Gage Park Branch
  • Chicago Lawn Branch
  • Back of the Yards Branch
  • South Chicago Branch
  • Vodak-East Side Branch
  • Lozano Branch
  • Douglass Branch
  • Altgeld Branch
  • Humboldt Park Branch
  • Richard M. Daley Branch
  • Little Village Branch
  • Albany Park Branch
  • Rogers Park Branch

Participating children will also receive bookmarks with read-alike titles that they can take advantage of as they begin to use their library card. Chicago Public Library encourages new card holders to share photos via email to press@chipublib.org, opens a new window or on social media with #FirstCardFriday.

“A library card is a free ticket to a world of possibilities and we are excited to offer this incentive for Chicago children and families,” said Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown. “Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children and obtaining that first library card can give a child a real sense of independence.”

Chicagoans with a library card are able to check out books, movies, music and more from CPL locations. They also have access to a wide range of library resources including eBooks, audiobooks, opens a new window and Brainfuse homework help, opens a new window, as well as all our online resources, opens a new window for school assignments. Chicago kids can use their library cards to read, learn and discover!

This book distribution event comes after Chicago Public Library announced that they are welcoming U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on February 2 for a virtual event to celebrate the release of her new book. Sotomayor spoke with award-winning Chicago author and sociologist of education Dr. Eve L. Ewing.
