View our full calendar of events- we look forward to seeing you at a CPL location.

Visit chipublib.org/digitalpasses and log in with your library card number and PIN. Once logged in, you can view all attractions and offers available to you.

You can also search for offers by date, attraction name or location. Information about each attraction and offer is available before making a reservation.

Using the calendar, you can choose what date you want to make the reservation for and then choose the Reserve option under the attraction. A confirmation box will appear, and you will receive a confirmation email.

    Reservation details:

    • Reservations must be made for a specific date. The digital pass is only valid for the reservation date listed on the pass - attractions have the right to decline a pass if you attempt to use it on a different date.
    • We recommend waiting to print or download your digital pass until you are sure you will be able to use it on the reservation date. Learn how to cancel or change your reservation.
    • You will get a reminder email three days before your reservation.
    • Some attractions will accept a mobile pass or printed pass; others will accept a printed pass only. We encourage you to visit your local library location if you need assistance printing.
    • Reservations can be made up to 3 months in advance (specifically, the current month plus the next two full months.
    • The person who makes the reservation must be present and able to provide an ID with the same name as is on the reservation.

You can borrow a WiFi hotspot or a Chromebook Kit for three weeks. A hotspot or kit will be automatically renewed up to 15 times if no one else has placed it on hold. Or you may renew the hotspot or kit yourself up to 15 times.

Check with each YOUmedia location for hours.

You may request books, audiobooks, articles, educational audiovisual materials and microfilm through interlibrary loan.

The following are not available to request through interlibrary loan:

    • Any title owned by CPL, including reference material and periodicals
    • Any titles published within the past six months, including those not ordered by CPL
      • Exception: Articles may be requested at any time, even when just published
    • Entertainment VHS, DVDs or CDs
    • eBooks or downloadable audiobooks
    • Computer programs, such as Rosetta Stone

Longer checkout periods are available for some titles. Please ask about vacation loans when checking out your materials.

Most materials may be returned to any CPL location. Internet to Go WiFi hotspots must be returned to the location where they were checked out.

Most CPL locations have book drops where most materials, including books, DVDs, CDs and audiobooks, may be returned at any time.

Selected materials may not be returned to a book drop and instead must be returned to the circulation desk during library hours. These materials are labeled "Do not return in book drop" and include discovery backpacks, Finch robots, fishing poles, Internet to Go WiFi hotspots and kits and Launchpads.

Please visit the CPL location you selected as the pickup location for your hold.

Books are filed by last name on a public holds shelf. CDs and DVDs are held at the checkout desk.

At the Harold Washington Library Center, please pick up your holds in the Popular Library on the 1st floor.

You may use up to two computer sessions a day. Sessions on most computers are one hour; sessions on “express” computers are 15 minutes. Computer sessions are available from the time a location opens until 10 minutes before the location closes.

Thank you for your interest in joining us to provide quality library service to all our patrons. Please see Jobs at CPL for information about the application process.

The availability of printing and emailing varies by resource, but most of these resources offer the option to print or email the information you find.

Look for buttons or links to download a printer-friendly version of the information or to email a copy of the information.

YOUmedia is free. It doesn't cost anything to use equipment or visit any YOUmedia space.

When you are ready to leave an event, click the red Leave button, which is on the bottom right of the computer screen and the top right of the mobile app.

If you joined the meeting by phone, simply hang up to leave the event.

Materials not returned within 7 days after the due date will incur a block on your account, preventing you from checking out materials until the items have been returned. Once an item has been overdue for 60 days, it will be considered lost and a replacement fee will be added to your account. Replacement fees for lost material will automatically be removed from your account upon return of the material.

Overdue fines are charged only if interlibrary loan materials are returned late.

Failure to pay outstanding balances to CPL or reciprocal libraries may result in your account being blocked and library services being restricted.

It's free to scan a document and either save it to a USB drive or email it.

Black and white printing of a scanned document costs 15 cents for each single-sided page. Double-sided and color printing is not available from the scanners.

Holds are held at your pickup location for six days.

We’re unable to extend the amount of time an individual hold is held; this ensures everyone receives their holds in a timely manner.

Calls are routed through an interpreting center, where an interpreter, fluent in ASL and spoken English or Spanish, appears on the device. The deaf and hard of hearing caller signs the message to the interpreter, and the interpreter relays the conversation between the two parties. Deaf or hard of hearing individuals can also use the videophone to call other deaf or hard of hearing individuals with a videophone.

We make every effort to obtain materials at no cost. However, some libraries charge a lending fee, and we must pass on these fees.

All free sources will be exhausted before using locations that charge lending fees. If a fee is required, we will contact you before requesting the material.

Typically, fees start at $10. Most requests for copies from medical periodicals require a fee of at least $10.

Please be aware that if you don’t pick up an interlibrary loan for which an approved fee has been charged, you will still be responsible for paying the fee.

We do not keep records of what you've checked out. However, you can turn on the Borrowing History feature in your account to keep track of titles you check out going forward.

If you are an Illinois resident who lives in a community with a reciprocal library, you are eligible for a Chicago Public Library card.

Reciprocal cardholders can check out books, DVDs and other materials, and use our online resources. Reciprocal cardholders cannot check out Digital Museum Passes or Internet to Go WiFi hotspots, or use OverDrive eBooks, audiobooks and magazines or hoopla videos, music and audiobooks.

Please visit any CPL location to fill out an application. You’ll need to show a current, valid ID with your name and address, as well as your current library card from your home library. After verification from your home library, we will issue a Chicago Public Library card.

If you are an Illinois resident who does not live in a community with a library and Chicago Public Library is the closest library to your residence, pursuant to 23 Ill. Adm. Code 3050 you may be eligible for a Chicago Public Library card for an annual fee. Please contact us for help determining your eligibility.

Chicago Public Library is committed to making information on this website accessible to all users, including people with disabilities.

If you cannot fully access the information on any page on our site, please contact Tiffany Breyne at (312) 745-3739 or by email at webmaster@chipublib.org. Please include the nature of the accessibility issue, the web address (URL) of the material with which you are having difficulty and your contact information.

We will try to provide the information to you in an alternate format and/or make the necessary improvements to make the information accessible.

In accordance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the City of Chicago has established a formal grievance procedure. If you wish to file a complaint, please contact the City’s designated ADA coordinator, Rachel Arfa, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, at (312) 744-7209 or by email at Rachel.Arfa@cityofchicago.org.

The library currently doesn't offer guided tours of the art in Harold Washington Library Center.

A checklist of the art in the building, organized by floor, is available in the lobby.

No, but you'll need to fill out a form with your name, address and what school you attend when you visit YOUmedia for the first time.

Yes, you can pause a hold that is “not ready.” While your hold is paused, you will continue to move ahead on the waiting list, but the hold will not be sent to your pickup location while it is paused. Use this option to manage your holds when you are away or don't have time to read.

To pause a hold, log in to your account and go to Holds.

All titles are available for streaming. Most are available for download, based on studio or publisher restrictions. However, when available for download, titles may only be downloaded to mobile devices, such as iOS and Android phones or tablets.

If you’ve accidentally selected the wrong format, contact eBooks Support.

Pending requests will appear in your account as soon as they are processed. If you have not seen it appear within 7 business days, please contact us. However, these requests usually take two to six weeks to arrive. It may take up to 20 business days to learn that no library will supply the title.

If your deadline is urgent, please ask a librarian or use WorldCat via FirstSearch to find the title at a nearby library. You may be able to check out the title from another Illinois library through reciprocal borrowing.

No, we do not offer library cards to out of state visitors. However, you don't need a library card to use materials on site at the library.

Yes, you may use your flash drive on our one-hour computers. No personal files will be saved on the hard drive.

Flash drives may not be used on 15-minute express computers.

YOUmedia offers a variety of equipment and devices for use in the YOUmedia space. You can use these items regardless of any fees on your account.

On the hoopla app, there’s a button that looks like a box with an arrow at the top right of the title detail page. Tap this to see the “Contact Us” button, and from there you can select “Report a Problem.”

On the hoopla website, if there’s a problem with playing a title, you should see the error message in the playback window with a link to “Report a Problem.”

Yes, we do have Kindle eBooks.

To transfer library eBooks to your Kindle, you must be connected to a WiFi network. You also may transfer Kindle eBooks to your Kindle using a USB cable.

For more information on how to use the OverDrive service with a Kindle, please refer to the help section.

Log in to your account and go to My Borrowing to track the status of your interlibrary loan request.

To check the status of requests for microfilm, photocopies or in-library use only items, please call Interlibrary Loan at (312) 747-4344 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

At HWLC YOUmedia and Woodson Regional YOUmedia, you can book the studio once you're certified. To get certified, you must attend studio certification.

To learn more about using other YOUmedia studios, reach out to the teen staff at the appropriate CPL location.

OverDrive offers hundreds of popular magazines in multiple languages. Flipster offers over twenty-five additional titles frequently sought by our patrons, but not offered through OverDrive. These titles include The Atlantic, Bloomberg Businessweek, Entertainment Weekly, Essence, People, Real Simple, Scientific American, and Time.

Check hoopla Help for answers to more frequently asked questions.

Or contact eBooks Support if you need additional help.

Yes, but we'll need to transfer your information from your old card to your new card.

Please send your old and new card numbers to OverDriveSupport@chipublib.org and we'll transfer your information (checkouts, holds, wish list items and history) to your new card number.

You’ll receive an email notification when your interlibrary loan is ready for pickup. If you haven’t added your email address to your account, you’ll be notified by phone.

The loan period for interlibrary loans is three weeks.

Interlibrary loan materials cannot be renewed.

Materials checked out via interlibrary loan are subject to the lending library's fees as well as CPL’s overdue fines and fees for replacement or repair of lost or damaged materials.

We charge overdue fines of 25 cents per day for interlibrary loan materials returned late.

Like all materials checked out from CPL, interlibrary loan items not returned within 7 days after the due date will incur a replacement fee, which will be added to your account. For interlibrary loan items, this replacement fee is a placeholder until we receive the actual replacement cost from the lending library. Your library card will be blocked until interlibrary loan items are returned or the replacement cost is paid.

If you need an item longer than the loan period, we suggest you submit another interlibrary loan request for the same title two weeks before the initial due date. That way we should have another copy of the title by the time you return the first copy.

OverDrive has an extensive Help section with answers to the most common questions.

Or you can contact eBooks Support if you need additional help.

If you are 18 years or older and have a physical CPL library card, you are eligible to use the digital pass program. Some attractions may require a photo ID for access to the attraction on the day of the reservation.

Bring your reservation pass. Your confirmation email will note if a printed pass is required or if a mobile pass is accepted. Bring the printed or mobile pass as directed. We encourage you to visit your local library location if you need assistance with printing.

Bring a photo ID to confirm identity and age. Some attractions may require a photo ID. Make sure the name on the ID matches the name on the reservation pass.

If you have not printed or downloaded your digital pass, you can log in to the reservation website and cancel up to the date of your reservation without counting against your limit for that attraction. After canceling, you would use the calendar to find another date to reserve your pass.

We recommend waiting to print or download your digital pass until you are sure you will be able to use it on the reservation date.

Visit chipublib.org/digitalpasses and log in with your library card number and PIN to see your current reservations.

Digital passes are available for a wide range of museums, historical societies, zoos and more across Illinois. Visit chipublib.org/digitalpasses to view all offers.

You can have three active reservations at one time. Once one of your reservation dates has passed, you can make another reservation.

Digital passes do not require holds. Visit chipublib.org/digitalpasses to reserve a pass.

Digital passes may not be renewed.

Digital passes do not need to be returned; they will expire after their reservation time period.

The 81 Club is a partnership between Chicago Public Library and Chicago Public Schools that removes barriers for students and teachers all over Chicago to access CPL resources. Students can participate in the classroom as well as with their new student card. The student card is valid for the entire year (including summer) and will need to be updated annually one year from the date the card was issued.

Learn more about the 81 Club.

All Chicago Public Schools teachers have an eTeach card that allows access to a number of digital resources to use in their classrooms.

The 81 Club student card removes the barrier of students needing to provide identification and a signed application from a parent/guarantor. The student card is more limited than a regular CPL card, in that students will be able to check out only 5 physical items. Restrictions that apply to regular CPL cardholders 13 and under also apply to the student card (e.g., no museum passes, hotspots or Chromebooks).

Yes, 81 Club student cards are available for all students from kindergarten through grade 12 in the city of Chicago, regardless of school enrollment or precise age.

Various sorting options are available until you have 100 titles in your Borrowing History. After you have more than 100 titles, the information is no longer stored in the same way, because keeping all of that information in the system would cause page load times to be unacceptably slow.

Adding titles to your Completed shelf allows you to sort and filter with more flexibility. In addition to sorting, you can exclude titles you don't want, and filter the shelf, making it easier to find a specific title.

CPL allows for you to choose the name that you want to use on your library card. An accepted form of ID is still required to get a card or update your address.

Materials checked out via interlibrary loan are subject to the lending library's fees as well as CPL’s overdue fines and fees for replacement or repair of lost or damaged materials.

To ensure that ILL materials are properly returned, we suggest the following:

    • When possible, return interlibrary loan materials to the checkout desk rather than the book drop.
    • Request a receipt upon returning your interlibrary loan materials.

Interlibrary loan items are not owned by Chicago Public Library, therefore these requests cannot be paused.

To cancel an interlibrary loan request, please email ill@chipublib.org or call (312) 747-4344 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Yes, we will make every attempt to obtain the specific title through interlibrary loan. However, many universities and colleges may keep the most recent edition in their course reserves or reference collections, which means they might not lend out these items.

No, we do not have fax machines at any of our locations.

We do have scanners, which you can use to scan and email a document. Please see our Scanners FAQ for more information.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Please contact your neighborhood location about possible volunteer opportunities.

To contact the Interlibrary Loan Department, please email ill@chipublib.org or call (312) 747-4344 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

If you live outside Chicago and would like to borrow materials or request photocopies of articles, obituaries or death notices from newspapers at CPL, please submit an interlibrary loan request through your local library.

For obituary requests giving the date of death, we will search up to two newspapers for three days following that date. Other requests must include specific information:

    • the full name(s)
    • exact date (day, month and year)
    • exact location (city and county) of the occurrence

If we locate an obituary or article, the minimum photocopy fee is $5.25 (25 cents a page plus $5 handling) per request. Please do not send money; a bill will accompany the photocopy sent to your local library.

Adobe Digital Editions 2.0, which is an app used to read eBooks from OverDrive, is compatible with several screen readers for people with low vision or visual disabilities.

Individuals who are unable to read standard print material due to a permanent or temporary visual or physical disability are eligible for downloadable book service via the National Library Service Braille and Audio Reading Download Service. This service is available through the Assistive Resources and Talking Book Center.

You’ll be charged a fee for replacement or repair of lost or damaged materials. We won’t hold you responsible for items lost or damaged by fire, flood or theft when documented by a police or insurance report.

If an item is lost, you’ll be required to pay the replacement cost of the item as well as any overdue fines owed for interlibrary loan materials. Once paid for, the item belongs to you.

If you find the item within 30 days of the date it was paid for, you can obtain a refund by bringing the item and the receipt to any CPL location. We refund only the cost of the item; any associated overdue fines will not be refunded. All refunds will be issued by U.S. mail from the City of Chicago.

If you lose your library card or key chain, please call any CPL location as soon as possible. You’re responsible for all materials, fines and fees checked out on your library card until its loss is reported.

Please visit any CPL location to fill out a new library card application. You’ll need to show a current, valid ID with your name, photo and Chicago address.

If you’re a reciprocal library cardholder, you’ll need to show a current, valid ID with your name and address, as well as your current library card from your home library. After verification from your home library, we’ll replace your Chicago Public Library card.

If your library card is damaged or broken, please bring it to any CPL location and we'll replace it free of charge. (lost card)

You may still use library services. You’ll need to show your current, valid driver’s license or state ID to allow staff to access your account.

A parent or guarantor listed on a child’s library card may still use library services for the child after showing a current, valid driver’s license or state ID to allow staff to access the child's account.

Thank you for considering a gift to the Chicago Public Library. You may make donations through the Chicago Public Library Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to support collection development, program and technology initiatives that connect library users to their community and to the world and ensure that all Chicagoans have the freedom to read, to learn and to discover at the Chicago Public Library.

Foundation-funded programs, such as One Book, One Chicago, Teacher in the Library and the Summer Learning Challenge, and support for neighborhood libraries keep the spirit of books and the thrill of discovery alive for all Chicagoans.

Thank you for thinking of us for your donation of materials. Because of the high cost of processing unsolicited materials, we do not accept donated materials.

We buy materials at a significant discount; these materials arrive ready to shelve. We also regularly remove outdated materials to make room for new materials.

We recommend that donations be given to shelters, foster homes, nursing homes, community agencies serving children, thrift shops and veterans organizations.

Thank you for your interest in joining us to provide quality library service to all our patrons. Please see Jobs at CPL for information about the application process.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Please contact your neighborhood location about possible volunteer opportunities.
