Biographical Notes

William Frederick Poole, 1821-1894

William Frederick Poole was born on December 24, 1821 in Salem, Massachusetts. Poole began studies at Yale in 1842 but had to leave due to financial difficulties. He returned 3 years later and graduated in 1849. While at Yale he worked as assistant librarian at the Brothers in Unity Library under John Edmands, who began to create a list of materials in books and magazines which could be useful to patrons. Poole succeeded Edmands during his senior year and expanded the project to index all of the periodicals in the Library. This was published in 1848 by G.P. Putnam and An Alphabetical Index to Subjects Treated in the Reviews and Other Periodicals, to which No Indexes Have Been Published was an immediate success. A second edition was published in 1853, and a third in 1882. The 1882 edition, Poole’s Index to Periodical Literature, was a much expanded publication being the result of a cooperative effort of over 50 librarians.

Poole worked at the Boston Athenaeum in 1851 as assistant librarian. He left for 4 years to work as librarian of the Boston Mercantile Library Association then returned to the Boston Athenaeum as librarian until 1869. He was appointed librarian of the Cincinnati Public Library from 1871 until 1873 and then moved to Chicago to organize the Chicago Public Library. Poole stayed at the Chicago Public Library until 1887 when he was offered a position to organize the Newberry Library in Chicago.

Poole was a founder of the American Library Association and served as its President from 1885 until 1887. He authored several works of American history, including Cotton Mather and Salem Witchcraft in 1869 and Anti-Slavery Opinions Before 1800 in 1873.

William Frederick Poole died on March 1, 1894.

Frederick H. Hild, 1858-1914

Frederick Henry Hild was born in Chicago in 1858, educated in the public schools, and began working for the Chicago Public Library in 1874 as a page. In 1881 he was appointed as Poole’s office assistant and chief cataloger. He was appointed Librarian in 1887 upon Poole’s resignation. He held this office until 1909, overseeing rapid growth of the Library and the construction of the Central Library (now the Cultural Center). He resigned in 1909 amid a controversy among the members of the Board of Directors.

Hild died on August 12, 1914 at the University of Virginia hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia of pneumonia and heart trouble. He was 55.

Henry E. Legler, 1861-1917

Henry E. Legler was born in Palermo, Italy on June 22, 1861 and was educated in Switzerland and the United States. He married Nettie M. Clark in 1890 and from 1890 to 1904 was the secretary of the Milwaukee School Board. From 1904 until 1909 he was secretary of the Wisconsin Library Commission and was appointed Librarian of the Chicago Public Library in 1909 following the resignation of F.H. Hild. During his tenure as Librarian Legler wrote the instrumental “A Library Plan for the Whole City” in which he laid out a blueprint for extension services for the Chicago Public Library using regional and branch libraries to serve the majority of Chicagoans, see Box 8, folder 17. This 1916 document is still referred to today as one of the key documents that formed the Chicago Public Library’s early years.

Legler died in September 1917.

Scope and Content

William Frederick Poole

This sub series primarily contains correspondence to Poole when he was Librarian. A small amount of correspondence dates from before Poole’s appointment as Librarian for the Chicago Public Library, and similarly, a small amount are dated after Poole’s move to the Newberry Library in 1887. These files are kept distinct and are marked in the finding guide where Poole was employed at the time of writing. The bulk of the papers, from Poole’s years at Chicago Public Library, mostly deal with typical library matters, with information regarding subscriptions, bills, and staffing matters. There are also a small amount of reports, prepared by Poole which contain statistical summaries, and 3 bound volumes of outgoing correspondence. Researchers are reminded to look at the other sub series within the Early Chicago Public Library Series (Papers of the President of the Board of Directors and the Papers of the Secretary of the Board of Directors) as well as the Proceedings of the Board of Directors and the Annual Reports of the Chicago Public Library. The Newberry Library in Chicago also holds a substantial collection of papers from Poole which date from 1858 until his death in 1894.

Frederick H. Hild

These papers are primarily the Librarian’s reports to the Board and correspondence. There is an original copy of the City Club of Chicago’s Bulletin, containing the report that ultimately led to Hild’s resignation as Librarian in 1909. There are also press clippings from that controversial time.

Henry E. Legler

These papers are mostly monthly reports filed by Legler for the Board of Directors. There is an original copy of Legler’s most famous accomplishment as Librarian, “A Library Plan for the Whole City” of 1916.

Arrangement

William Frederick Poole

Item level description has been completed on these papers and to some extent arrangement has been imposed by the archivist. All files have been arranged as far as possible into subject order, in accordance with the original arrangement found in Secretary Wickersham’s papers, and then into chronological order.

Files which predate Poole’s appointment as Librarian of Chicago Public Library are listed first and the institution where he was employed is indicated on the finding guide.

The papers which deal with the Chicago Public Library are organized into the same subject categories as other sub series within the Early Chicago Public Library Series. In this case the only subjects are General Library Business and Employment.

Following these are files which date from Poole’s years at the Newberry Library.

There are also a number of reports written by Poole which contain mainly statistical summaries. These reports have been organized by type, monthly reports are filed chronologically together, as are annual reports. Reports written for specific issues are listed at the end.

Finally there are 3 bound volumes of outgoing correspondence, which are indexed. These volumes contain outgoing correspondence from whomever filled the position of Librarian. Thus, before Poole’s appointment in late 1873 there are letters written by W.B. Wickersham, acting Librarian. Similarly, there are letters following Poole’s departure written by Wickersham, who again acted as Librarian until Frederick Hild’s appointment in 1887.

Frederick Henry Hild

Reports have been arranged according to type, then chronologically. Correspondence has been organized alphabetically by the sender’s last name or by the institution/company name if more appropriate. Clippings have been Xeroxed onto acid free paper and arranged by date.

Henry E. Legler

Reports have been arranged according to type, then chronologically.
