Clearing Branch began as a sub-branch of Chicago Lawn during World War II, opening on May 2, 1942, managed by the capable Mrs. Naomi Gale. The new sub-branch was the result of eight years of polite requests for a library in the neighborhood from the local women’s club and the PTA. Back then, the rent for the former grocery store at 5608 W. 63rd Street was $70, and the staff salaries added up to $330 per month. Source: Clear-Ridge Historical Society.
