The Chicago Reader has finally decided the winner of the Greatest Ever Chicago Book NCAA-style tournament and it is The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. Wilkerson's history of the Great Migration beat out Studs Terkel's Working, a book about the lives of working people. It was a close race, however, with six judges selecting The Warmth of Other Suns and four judges selecting Working.
Perhaps this will prompt you to pick up Wilkerson's highly readable and moving history, which Janet Maslin at the New York Times called a "landmark piece of nonfiction." Wilkerson's work was a One Book, One Chicago selection in 2013. Curious readers should take a look at the guide for discussion questions and additional reading suggestions.
If you want to explore the original sixteen Chicago titles the Chicago Reader selected as well as catch-up on what the tournament was all about, I wrote about it earlier this year.
