They might not fly and roar like animals, or bloom flowers and fruit like plants, but when you take a minute to stop and appreciate their place in nature, it’s clear: rocks totally rock! Not convinced? Well, rocks have a superpower – they're amazing storytellers!
The earth is over 4.5 billion years old, while humans haven't even existed for half a million years. So how do we know what the earth was like before humans? Even after just a few hundred years, all traces of of animals and plants can disappear – except for when we look at rocks and minerals. Rocks contain fossils that show us what plants and animals looked like, tracks and paths that showed us where they moved, and changes in the rock layers over time that tell us how the Earth was changing too.
Check out some of the amazing stories rocks have to tell us with one of these great reads:
The Doomsday Detectives: Rocks and fossils (plus a couple of brilliant scientific minds working together -- and sometimes against each other) take center stage to solve one of the biggest questions in science: what caused the dinosaurs to go extinct?
Stalactite & Stalagmite: Two little nubs inside a cave that form over thousands of years, stalactite (on the ceiling, see the "c" in their name?) and stalagmite (with a "g" for on the ground) literally talk in this funny, charming picture book that will leave you enchanted with the magic of cave life.
Old Rock (is Not Boring): Are rocks boring? Well, only if you think forming in the planet's core, erupting out of a volcano and seeing everything from the dinosaurs to mammoths to glaciers is boring -- and Old Rock is happy to tell about all the amazing things they've seen.
All the Rocks We Love: Rocks have another thing that makes them special: you can find them almost anywhere! Lots of people all over the world love to collect rocks and feel connected to the world around them, and even though we might all see rocks every day, we all see different rocks with different stories to tell.
What other kinds of stories will you hear when you're exploring nature? The possibilities are endless!
