Baseball’s All-Time All-Stars

Baseball season may be long, but I think it’s the best six months of the year! 162 games in 180 days with an All-Star break in the middle, giving the best players time to show off their skills. Fans get to enjoy their favorite players playing together—either on the American League team or the National League team—in an All-Star Game that features the best of the best, selected by the fans. Whichever league wins gets the advantage for the World Series.

There have been amazing baseball players over the years, and the All-Star break’s slow baseball schedule gives all young fans time to learn more about some of the best players in baseball history.

We Are the Ship tells of a time when Major League Baseball was not integrated and black players had to play in their own league. Many of these players were as good, or better than, players in the Major League, and the art in the book really shows off their talents.

Dan Gutman’s Baseball Card Adventure series is a fun way to read about the best baseball players in history.  If a baseball card could transport me back in time, I’d definitely want to meet Babe Ruth in Chicago like Joe and his father do in Babe and Me.

While Ernest L. Thayer's Casey at the Bat may not describe a real baseball player, this poem describes a classic situation—two outs in the bottom of the ninth. In this version, the illustrations by Christopher Bing really make you feel like you’re at a 19th century baseball game and the mighty Casey has (spoiler alert!) struck out.

Who is your favorite baseball player of all time?
