Missions & Prizes

Coinciding with the release of each of the six online reading installments of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon, we will be assigning a mission for Chicagoans to participate in!

Mission 6: Who's Your Sidekick? (April 20 - May 10) - CLOSED
Much of the sixth and final section, “The League of the Golden Key,” focuses on the non-traditional relationships of our main characters. For this final mission, we invite you to tell us about your sidekicks.

Mission 5: Learn More About Joe's Experience (April 6 - April 26) - CLOSED
For this mission, we ask you to think about how you might find out more about Joe’s experience during the war by exploring the Chicago Public Library collection. What books, movies, or other items can you find in the collection that might illuminate Joe’s experience during the war, and in Antarctica?

Mission 4: LGBT Heroes (March 23 - April 12) - CLOSED
While the city Kavalier and Clay inhabit is having its own Golden Age -- and, indeed, our two main characters are in their own lives -- the need for connection and community is as present as ever. Inspired by Sam Clay’s profound recognition of his true self, we ask for you to consider who your LGBT hero is.

Mission 3: How Do You Escape? (March 9 - March 29) - CLOSED
Escapism is a key theme throughout The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, especially in Part 3. As Joe struggles to feel happiness with his success, finally finding it in the inspiration for the character of Luna Moth, we wondered: what do you do to escape? What are your favorite ways to find peace, joy and contentment?

Mission 2: Make Your Own Comic Book Character (February 23 - March 15) - CLOSED
Whether you choose to imagine yourself as a comic book character or create something entirely fictional, in this second mission for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, we would like you to create your own comic book character.

Mission 1: Make a Golem (February 2 - March 1) - CLOSED
For this first mission, make your own golem! Share your interpretation of what the golem in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay looks like… or get really creative and make one that's entirely your own.

Individual Mission Prizes One submission from each mission will be chosen at random to win a $50 Powell's giftcard, courtesy of BiblioCommons.

Grand Prize
At the end of the reading program, one submission will be chosen at random from across all six missions to win an Apple iPad Air 2, courtesy of BiblioCommons.
