1849 – Went to California during gold rush and met with some success
1851 - Founded and was president of Heath & Milligan Manufacturing Company, a paint maker
1853 – Married Miss Julia Dickerman of Jefferson, IL with whom he had 4 children
1870 – His business burnt to the ground, then again the following year in the Great Fire
1871 – Elected alderman of 12th Ward, served 5 years
