1909, January 20: Dunne (at 68th St) Water Crib Fire
A fire in a temporary Water Intake Crib structure resulted in the death of 60 workmen on January 20, 1909. Some of the victims drowned in the icy waters of Lake Michigan. The crew of the tug “Morford” rescued those who reached the floating ice and debris on the surface. The cause of the fire was not determined.
