Historical Note

In the early 1850s, small frame cottages occupied by Germans, Irish and Scandinavians built up the Near West Side to Halsted Street on the west and Roosevelt Road on the south. In addition, African-American migration from Kentucky, Missouri and Virginia moved westward along Lake and Kinzie Streets, adding to an African-American community that had resided there at the time of the city charter in 1837. In the decade preceding the 1871 Fire, the population of the area reached 160,000. Although the Fire originated in the Near West Side, it burned north and east, causing minimal damage to the neighborhood and an increase in business activity and housing construction. Population reached 200,000.

In the following decades new immigrants, mostly Italians, Russian and Polish Jews, and later Greeks, displaced the older German and Irish populations. Poverty and deterioration in the area led to the establishment of Hull House by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889, a settlement house which became a 13-building complex offering day care, a theater, citizenship classes, and other services to the community. As Jews left the area, African-Americans and Mexicans moved in. In the 1930s and 1940s, little private home construction took place, while numerous public housing projects were built. The area has been subject to much alteration in the decades following the 1950s, with the construction of the Northwest (Kennedy) and Dan Ryan expressways, and the University of Illinois Chicago campus, which destroyed virtually all of the Hull House complex and the historic Italian neighborhood which it served.

SUPPLEMENT 1 (Folders 20:1-15)
The materials in this Supplement were drawn from a sizable corpus of records originating with the West Side Historical Society, omitted from cataloging in the original collection. Of particular note are the excellent "alumni" records of Brown School, especially that of Billie Burke, widow of alumnus Florenz Ziegfeld (20:13)
Also included with this Supplement is folder 17:3a, an 1891 issue of the West Division High School newspaper, the earliest issue extant in this collection.
These materials were processed in February 1989.

SUPPLEMENT 2 (Folders 20: 16-43)
The materials in this supplement are, like those in Supplement 1, drawn largely from the collections of the West Side Historical Society. Of special note are the files on various members of the Guiteau family, whose most notorious representative was Charles Julius Guiteau (1841-1882), the assassin of President James Garfield in 1881. Also included in this supplement are Oversize items 12, 13, and 14, described below.

These materials were processed in February of 1990.

Provenance

The West [Near West] Side Community Collection was originally part of the collections of the West Side Historical Society, which formed at the Legler branch of The Chicago Public Library in 1930 to promote and collect the history of Chicago's west side. Upon the dissolution of the Historical Society in the late 1950s, its records and materials remained at the Legler branch, where they suffered the mistreatment and depredations of unsupervised use and inadequate storage facilities. To protect the materials, an agreement was struck in 1976 with the University of Illinois-Chicago Campus for the temporary custody of the collection at the University of Illinois. As agreed, the materials were transferred to The Chicago Public Library's Special Collections Divisions ten years later, where they were divided up by community area, and processed, in 1989, under the auspices of a grant from the Dr. Scholl Foundation, and placed in the Neighborhood History Research Collection.

Originally called the West Side Community Collection, the collection more properly concerns the neighborhood of the Near West Side, bounded as follows: on the north by Kinzie (400 N), on the west by Maplewood (2524 W), on the south by 16th Street (1600 S), and on the east by the Chicago River.

Access

The West [Near West] Side Community Collection is available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. The collection does not circulate, although photocopy and photoreproduction services are available depending upon the condition of the original materials. First time patrons to Special Collections must present photo identification and complete a Reader Registration Form. Telephone inquiries on this collection and other Special Collections holdings can be directed to 312-747-4875.
