The Englewood Woman's Club was organized in 1896 and its first president was Frances Stuart Parker. Also in 1896, the club incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois and joined the General Federation of Woman's Club and the Illinois Federation of Woman's Clubs. One year later, the club became a member of the Cook County League.
The purpose of the Englewood Woman's Club as defined in Article II of its By-laws, "Shall be social intercourse and the promotion of the highest interest of humanity through Sociological, Literary, Educational, Art, and Music work." Membership was limited to 650 paid members, "exclusive of Honorary, Non-resident and Junior members." Meetings were held at 673-6738 Wentworth Avenue every Monday afternoon.
This small collection consists of one speech and of annual yearbooks. The yearbooks are arranged in chronological order.
The records of the Englewood Woman's Club were accessioned by the Chicago Public Library during the period 1915 through 1931 and located in the Library's Reference Department. During the renovation of the Cultural Center in the 1970s, many of the Library's early accessions were transferred to the Records Storage Center. After the creation of the Special Collections Division in 1976, the material was again transferred; this time, becoming the responsibility of the Special Collections Division. In January 1985 the material was added to the Neighborhood History Research Collection and combined with materials from the Englewood Community Collection to form the Records of the Englewood Woman’s Club.
The Englewood Woman's Club Records are available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. The collection does not circulate, although photocopy and photoreproduction services are available depending upon the condition of the original materials. First time patrons to Special Collections must present photo identification and complete a Reader Registration Form. Telephone inquiries on this collection and other Special Collections holdings can be directed to 312-747-4875.
