Outgoing Correspondence | Departmental Records | Ephemera

Scope and Content

The James W. Ellsworth Collection (WCE/JWE), held in the Chicago Public Library's Special Collections & Preservation Division, contains a wide variety of records relating to one of the most significant events in Chicago history, the World's Columbian Exposition (WCE) of 1893. The collection consists primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence generated by James W. Ellsworth, a member of the WCE Board of Directors. Additionally, the collection includes WCE departmental reports and correspondence and ephemeral items such as tickets, invitations and programs that Ellsworth collected during his involvement with the Exposition. Together, these materials document the 1893 World's Fair from its planning stages in the late 1880's to its conclusion in 1893, and the subsequent development of the South Parks and the Field Columbian Museum.

James W. Ellsworth, a successful businessman with dealings both in Chicago and New York, was initially reluctant to participate in the development of a World's Fair in Chicago. After he learned that the planners of the Fair envisioned an international exposition rather than a localized "county fair," Ellsworth directed all his energies toward the successful development of the "Dream City." James Ellsworth's contributions to the Exposition ranged from working with the nation’s railroad companies to raise capital, purchasing the Lorenzo Lotto portrait of Columbus, participating on the WCE Board of Directors and the Committees on Liberal Arts and Music, and securing the loan of great European artwork for display in the Exposition’s Palace of Fine Arts (now the Museum of Science and Industry).

Incoming Correspondence
11 boxes - 6 linear feet

Incoming Correspondence (WCE/JWE Incoming) which makes up the bulk of the James W. Ellsworth Collection, consists of 926 letters. The materials, dating from the planning stages of the Fair in the late 1880's, to the early 1900's are arranged alphabetically by correspondent, and are sub-arranged chronologically. Significant correspondents include: Charles Barber and O.C. Bosbyshell from the U.S. Mint Department; architect Daniel H. Burnham; landscape designer Henry Sargent Codman; William Eleroy Curtis; John Van Dyke and Frank Mason, writing about the purchase of the Lorenzo Lotto portrait of Christopher Columbus; financier Lyman Gage; Pennsylvania Railroad President James McCrea; and poet Harriet Monroe. Although the letters in the Incoming Correspondence series relate to all aspects of the Exposition, major topics in the collection include the following: controversies in the Fair's Bureau of Music; the design and production of the Columbian half dollar; Harriet Monroe's Columbian Ode; Ellsworth's travels to Europe on behalf of the Exposition's Committee on Fine Arts; the development of the Field Columbian Museum; the Lorenzo Lotto portrait of Columbus; the proposed permanent organization of the WCE Board of Directors; and, Ellsworth's correspondence with the railroad companies to raise capital for the Exposition. This guide includes a subject index to facilitate research.

Outgoing Correspondence
1 Box - .5 Linear Feet / Arranged Chronologically

The Outgoing Correspondence (WCE/JWE Outgoing) in the James W. Ellsworth Collection consists of 85 letters generated by Ellsworth and related to World's Columbian Exposition activities. The letters are arranged chronologically and date from 1890 to1901. Each letter is annotated and the collection guide includes a name and subject index. Major topics addressed in Ellsworth's outgoing correspondence include issues related to the design and production of the Columbian half-dollar, Ellsworth's efforts with the railroad companies to raise funds for the Exposition, a proposed permanent organization of the World's Fair Board of Directors, and correspondence about Exposition badges, medals and souvenirs.

All correspondence in the collection originates from James W. Ellsworth unless otherwise indicated.
