In 1869, the first forty acre tract was subdivided by L.W. Beck. A year earlier, the Cook County Normal School was established on a ten acre tract of land donated by Beck. At that time, the area was known as Normal Park. The displacement of Chicagoans by the Fire of 1871 led to unprecedented development in Englewood. In 1872 the area encompassing Wentworth to Halsted and 55th to 71st streets was platted and opened to residential development. By the time the elevated system was extended to the southwest side, the character of Englewood had matured. By 1905 most of the single family dwellings in the community had been built.
Englewood had always had a working class, blue collar character. In 1920 there were 86,619 people living in Englewood. One-fifth were foreign born-mostly from northwestern European countries. Only two per cent of the population was black. By 1930, residential construction had all but ceased. In fact, in 1960, only two per cent of the units in Englewood had been constructed since 1930.
The character of Englewood had changed again in 1960. While German and Irish Americans controlled the area politically and economically, blacks accounted for exactly sixty-nine per cent of Englewood's population. The 1960s witness massive "white flight" from the Englewood area, further damaging the image and stability of the neighborhood. The dramatic changes taking place during the 1960s are attested to by the facts that owner occupancy of residential property in Englewood had slipped to twenty-seven per cent and that fifty-six per cent of Englewood’s residents now lived in multiple unit dwellings.
The ECC is organized into thirteen separate subject series ranging alphabetically from Biographical Data to War Time Activities (See Series Descriptions below). Photographs have been removed to the Neighborhood History Research Collection-Audio-visual Collection (NHRC-AV) and are listed following the Box and Folder Inventory. Cross referencing has been provided for related subjects appearing in different series or record groups.
The materials contained in the ECC document Englewood's development from around the 1850s to the early 1960s. The crossing of the Michigan, Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad's tracks in 1852 by the Chicago, Rock Island Railroad's tracks at what is now 63rd and LaSalle streets began the transformation of Englewood. The little community along side the tracks was known as Chicago Junction, until 1868, when a group of newly arrived settlers from Englewood, New Jersey renamed their township Englewood, Illinois. True to the character of the Englewood area, its first residents were largely German and Irish railroad workers. The Englewood settlement remained close to the junction but even in the 1860s and 1870s, the community began extending east and west along 63rd street.
Perhaps the most impressive aspects of the ECC are its fine collection of audio-visual materials and the series devoted to schools in Englewood. Yearbooks, student notebooks and photographs of Lindbloom and Parker High School as well as information on the Cook Country Normal School can be researched in this collection.
What follows is a list of important subjects located in the ECC:

Supplement 1
The materials in Supplement 1 are few but rich. They are described
more fully in the Contents List. The items in folders 7:13, 15-18,
and 20 were a donation of Alice Jacoby Harnish, who was born in Englewood
in 1905. This material covers Mrs. Harnish's teen years of the early
1920s. See also items from Mrs. Harnish in the Englewood High School
collection. Early history of Englewood is shown in the business broadsides
of the Englewood Roller Skating Rink, 1885 (7:14), and the concert program
in South Park, 1877 (7:19).

In 1937 members of the Englewood Historical Association began to collect and to catalog historic manuscript materials, photographs and artifacts depicting the development and character of Englewood, Illinois. The EHA stored these materials at the Chicago Public Library's Hiram Kelly Branch Library; located at 6151 S. Normal Boulevard from 1937 until 1985. In 1985, working under the auspices of a Dr. Scholl Foundation grant, the Special Collections Division of the Chicago Public Library undertook the responsibility of processing and housing the materials.
Processed April 1989.
The Englewood Community Collection is available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. The collection does not circulate, although photocopy and photoreproduction services are available depending upon the condition of the original materials. First time patrons to Special Collections must present photo identification and complete a Reader Registration Form. Telephone inquiries on this collection and other Special Collections holdings can be directed to 312-747-4875.
Duplicate materials and selected photocopies have been returned to the Hiram Kelly Branch Library.
