Supplement 1 | Supplement 2 | Supplement 3 | City-Wide Collection Photographs
The Chicago City-Wide Collection contains materials that overlap several neighborhoods.
The Chicago City-Wide Collection consists of an initial accession and three supplemental accessions. Each accession consists of an assortment of manuscript, printed and photographic materials. The focus of this collection is general Chicago history, covering the city as a whole and the communities for which there is no separate neighborhood history collection. Materials on the Loop and Downtown areas can be found in this collection. Special strengths of the collection include historical and contemporary documentation of the 1871 Chicago Fire, a series of Chicago maps dating back to 1835, and early West and South Side Park Commission reports and maps.
The
intellectual arrangement of Chicago City-Wide is topical. All material
has been sorted into one of several series, described below. Certain items
in the collection inherently fall through the cracks between these categories;
for example, a 1923 map of the Chicago underworld is filed under "Clubs
and Organizations" (See Oversize Folder 7). Within each series, material
is arranged alphabetically except where indicated otherwise. Series descriptions
are provided below. Photographs, although listed and housed separately,
are organized into corresponding series and include Portraits, Business
Establishments, Churches, Clubs and Organizations, Residences, Schools,
Streets, Transportation, and Historical Events such as the Chicago Fire.
To facilitate research, all photographs, regardless of accession, are
listed together.A complete list of photographs can be found in the photograph
finding guide.
The contents of the Initial Accession are described below. Supplements 1-3 are described separately, preceding their Box and Folder Inventories.
BIOGRAPHICAL
DATA
Materials in this series include folders containing biographical
sketches of many Chicagoans. Persons for whom there is a significant amount
of information have their own folders, while those with sparse documentation
are grouped together alphabetically in folders. About one quarter of the
material consists of memorial resolutions presented to the family of Mayor
Carter Henry Harrison, who was assassinated in 1893. These resolutions
were acquired by The Chicago Public Library in 1905 and are an excellent
study in 19th century calligraphy.
BUSINESS
ESTABLISHMENTS
Items in this series come from a wide variety of businesses and
business organizations, and include advertisements, directories, newspaper
clippings, catalogs, programs, and other printed promotional material.
Significant items include the First Annual Statement of the Trade
and Commerce of Chicago, issued by the Board of Trade; materials
on the Chicago Association of Commerce; promotional material for the Marshall
Field, Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck department stores; and articles
and booklets on the Union Stockyards. Patrons researching Chicago buildings
can find brochures and documents on some of Chicago's famed edifices
such as the John Hancock Center and the Merchandise Mart.
CEMETERIES
This small series includes a map of the famous graves at Graceland
Cemetery on Chicago's North Side.
CHURCHES
Of special note in this series is an 1841 broadside for the Chicago
Sabbath School Celebration and a program from the 28th International Eucharistic
Congress (Roman Catholic), which took place in 1926.
CLUBS
AND ORGANIZATIONS
Materials on Clubs and Organizations in this collection are organized
into three sub-series: General, a wide range of manuscript and printed
items on Chicago clubs, private social service organizations, and political
parties; Lincoln Park Branch Library Surveys, material collected in a
survey of community services by the Lincoln Park Branch Library in 1976-1977;
and Club Yearbooks, dating principally from 1900 to 1935. The majority
of the latter were transferred to Special Collections from the Library's
Social Sciences and History Division.
HISTORICAL
ESSAYS AND SKETCHES
Various manuscript and printed historical essays are found in
this series and include a number of titles on the geologic history of
the Chicago area, information on early Chicago (especially Fort Dearborn),
a rich collection of materials on the 1871 Chicago Fire, and articles
on the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Materials are arranged alphabetically
by the name of author, when known, or otherwise by title or event.
HOSPITALS
This small series include the 1869 and 1870 annual reports for
the Chicago Protestant Orphan Asylum.
LAND
DEEDS
Material in this series consists of Title Abstracts to various
plots of land. Researchers interested in this topic should also see Box
45, a computer print-out of First Land Purchases in Cook County, 1805-1885.
This resource, produced by the Illinois State Archives, lists the name
of its first owner, residence at time of purchase, date, price, legal
description, and volume/page for the original recorded deed for each portion
of acreage in Cook County. The originals are located in the Illinois State
Archives in Springfield, Illinois. Researchers should be aware that the
arrangement of these materials is by Township, Range, and Section Number.
There is no alphabetical index of purchasers.
MUNICIPAL
AGENCIES
Items in this series are arranged alphabetically by the name
of the agency or, in the case of articles about some aspect of government,
by author or title. The most significant material in this series consists
of items from the Chicago Plan Commission, which was developed out of
Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago (See Call Number
NA9127.C4C7 1909).
Any kind of government activity is found among materials in this series-for
example, material on the Post Office, while not a municipal government
body, is located here. Utilities (gas, electric and water) have been placed
here rather than under Series II: Business Establishments. Tax bills and
tax receipts have been grouped together here under the heading "Taxes."
General Chicago Board of Education material is found here while items
on specific schools is located in Series XIII: Schools. Information on
the Chicago Transit Authority, while a city agency, is located in Series
XV: Transportation. Oversize material consists primarily of maps of the
City's division into wards and maps of the individual wards. These are
cataloged under the name of the agency that produced them, either the
Board of Election Commissioners or the Department of Public Works.
MUSEUMS
An important item in this small series is the invitation to the
1894 opening of the Field Museum of Natural History.
PARKS
The most important items in this series are a collection of 19th
century Annual Reports of the South Park and West Chicago Park commissions,
tracing some of the earliest developments of the Chicago park system.
Also of importance (and exceptional beauty) are 1871-1872 oversize maps
of Central (now Garfield), Douglas and Humboldt parks, the first three
West Side parks. (Related material on Douglas, Garfield and Humboldt parks
can be found in the Lawndale-Crawford Community Collection, the East Garfield
Park Community Collection, and Humboldt Park Community Collection, respectively.)
RESIDENCES
Significant materials in this series include a brochure on the
Mies Van Der Rohe-designed 860-880 N. Lake Shore Drive Buildings, as well
as printed promotional material on other important Chicago residences.
SCHOOLS
This series includes information on elementary and secondary
schools, colleges, and universities, and is divided into materials concerning
schools in general and those regarding specific schools, arranged alphabetically.
Of special note in the general materials are a series of Board of Education
"Qualifying Exams" given to prospective teachers (1916-1941)
and an excellent set of Fact Sheets for nearly 200 schools on the West
Side. Much of the material in the Schools Series was collected by the
West Side Historical Society in the 1940s.
STREET
SCENES
The bulk of the material on streets consists of an excellent
collection of Chicago street maps dating from the 1830s to the 1950s.
Most of these are located in oversize folders. There is a short series
of folders in Box 38 about specific streets, arranged alphabetically.
TRANSPORTATION
The Transportation Series is divided into sub-series on Bridges,
Public Mass Transit, Railroads, and Water Transportation. The majority
of material relates to public mass transit and railroads. Of particular
note are Volumes 7-23 of the Chicago Surface Lines' Surface
Service Magazine and an 1855 brochure for the Illinois Central Railroad.
Special Collections and Preservation Division also has a collection of
Railroad Posters that may be viewed by appointment. See listing in Binder
# 9, General for details.
VIEWBOOKS
This series contains souvenir viewbooks and guidebooks to Chicago,
and individual city views from 1871 to 1930. It is an excellent reference
source for images of particular buildings.
WAR
TIME ACTIVITIES
Information about Chicago in wartime and Chicagoans who went
to fight in wars is found in this series and covers the Spanish-American
War, the Boxer Rebellion, World War I, and World War II. Twelve scrapbooks
in Boxes 43 and 44 detail Chicago news coverage of the last months of
World War II.
Provenance
The Chicago City-Wide Collection has its origins in miscellaneous material collected in the mid-20th century by the West Side Historical Society. When the historical society's materials were brought to the Chicago Public Library's Special Collections Department in 1986, they were divided into the West Side community collections that now are a part of the larger Neighborhood History Research Collections. Some material, however, did not specifically concern West Side neighborhoods, or overlapped several neighborhoods. In some instances, documentation about a neighborhood was too sparse to be cataloged as a separate collection. These materials formed the core - approximately two linear feet - of the Chicago City-Wide Collection. The collection as it now stands, comes from a wide range of sources: transfers from other Chicago Public Library agencies, libraries across the nation, purchases, and private donations. Where appropriate, the provenance of individual items has been noted on folders. Provenance information for Supplements 1-3 is provided in their respective Scope and Content notes.
The Chicago City-Wide Collection is available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. The collection does not circulate although photocopy services are available depending upon the condition of the materials. First time patrons to the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room must present a photo-i.d. and complete a Reader Registration Form. Telephone inquiries on this collection and other Special Collections holdings can be directed to 312-747-4875.

Business Papers, 1881-1883
This material (90 items in 70 folders) contains
business papers dating from 1881 the retail house of Foltz and Givens (Abingdon,
Illinois) and correspondence and from financial papers (1882-1883) for overdue
bill collections by the Union National Bank of Abingdon. The materials were collected
by T.E. Givens, who was a cashier with the Union National Bank. The materials
are on the letterheads and checks of Chicago businesses and banks, which is of
value to researchers looking at late 19th century advertising or for the addresses
of now-defunct businesses. This material was transferred to Special Collections from
