Unsung Local Heroes Honored in Uptown

Cameras were flashing nonstop on Friday, September 11, as South-East Asia Center founders San O and Peter Porr were recognized for their 35 years of service to the Uptown immigrant community with an honorary street renaming.

Over a hundred people gathered to celebrate, including some news media and the two aldermen whose wards SEAC straddles—46th Ward Alderman James Cappleman and 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman—both of whom gave speeches about San's and Peter's dedication to improving the lives of those who found Uptown as their point of entry in Chicago and the United States.

The Bezazian Branch has been working with SEAC and their students and clients for many years, hosting ESL classes and partnering on literacy grants. We're thrilled for San's and Peter's formal recognition of their endless dedication and service to the community.
