Teens, “Lettuce” Tell You About Gardens at Back of the Yards Branch

Teens, have you ever seen or tasted hydroponically grown lettuce? This summer at Back of the Yards Branch YOUmedia, you can join Natalie, our teen librarian, and other teens in discovering how plants are grown both in the library and around the city!

You'll learn about hydroponic gardens (using water and plant food) and aquaponic gardens (using fish to create fertilizer), plus more traditional gardens with soil. You'll also take a field trip to tour the neighborhood Plant Chicago to uncover how this organization has transformed an industrial building into an environmentally friendly indoor garden.

This mini-grant project managed by Natalie at Back of the Yards Branch is part of Imagine Doing More!, CPL's 2018 Teen Summer Challenge, in which teens are challenged to improve their Chicago environment. Find out more about how you can get involved by stopping in or check out teen events at Back of the Yards Branch.
