Job Description
Under the supervision of library branch staff, you will collaborate with your fellow interns to assist patrons, promote summer programs, organize and decorate spaces, create book lists, promote reading and learn about all facets of public library work. Your capstone project this summer will be to create and co-lead a public library program for the age group of your choice.
New this summer, in partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago, all interns will be trained to lead the Artist’s Studio in the Library, a project that connects art, creativity and community. If you have an interest in libraries and arts education, this is the perfect summer to be a CPL intern.
Application Requirements
- Be a City of Chicago resident
- Attend a Chicago High School or equivalent
- If you are about to graduate from high school this spring, you are still eligible to apply
- Be between the ages of 16 and 19 years old on the day the program begins on June 22nd
- Have a Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number
- If you don't have one, you can apply for one here; or search for a Chicago-area SSA office near you using this tool.
Internship Information
- Program Dates: June 22nd - August 1st
- Interns will work 20 hours/week
- Pay Rate is $16.60/hr
- Intern schedules vary by location. Schedules can be seen on the After School Matters application.
- Internship Orientation: Wednesday, June 24th, 10am-3pm @ Art Institute of Chicago
- Internship Showcase: Wednesday, July 29th, 10am-3pm @ TBA

- Create an account or log in to the Chicago Youth Works (CYW) application portal.
- Complete the CYW application.
- In the Opportunities section of the CYW application, select “After School Matters.”
- Once you complete the CYW application, you will be prompted to complete the After School Matters (ASM) application.
- On the ASM application double check your personal information.
- On the Choose Programs screen you can find library position by searching under:
- Program Name: “CPL” or your local library branch name
Program description: “Library”
You can apply for as many library positions as you would like, but you can only be hired for one position.
If you are selected for an interview, branch staff will reach out to schedule an in-person interview during the month of May – so, make sure to check your email regularly!
