Photovoice: Duvin

Pedalos/Pedals, 2013

I like this picture a lot because somehow it makes me see how life can change from one moment to the next, without sometimes giving us the option to choose one way or the other. When I was in my country, which is in Central America, I wanted to be a lawyer and now here I am working as a truck driver. It isn't the job I thought it would be, but I do like it and have learned to enjoy it. It also makes me think that everyone has the power to make the necessary changes for a better life.

In the online exhibit Picturing a New Life in Chicago, people who were forced to flee their home countries because of war, persecution or violence share photos and inspiring stories about adjusting to a new life here. Some of the photographers came to Chicago through a refugee resettlement program. Others sought political asylum. Learn more in Online Exhibit: Forced Migration Photovoice Project.
