Art Exhibit by Ernest Whiteman III at Woodson Regional Library

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Woodson Regional Library hosts ICONOCLAST or "How I Stopped Worrying about 'Native American' Art and Just Be Northern Arapaho," an exhibit by artist Ernest Whiteman III in November.

Artist Statement

Whiteman describes his art as "Native American" art without Native American imagery.

"I defy the label “Native American” and make art that does the same. I hate putting anything related to Arapaho culture in my films or art because that is still appropriating culture. Worse, it is selling it, as if my culture is a commodity to be sold. Leading to the greatest desecration of culture—the loss of authority over our own voice and culture. When a buyer pays they are buying the right to be the expert on it."
