Chicago Public Library (CPL) is leveling up with the return of Gamer’s Universe, the city’s teen-led gaming convention. Now in its fourth year, this all-ages celebration of gaming culture will take over Harold Washington Library Center on Saturday, June 14 from 11 am to 4 pm.
Organized in partnership with the Chicago Teen Gamer’s Guild (CTGG), a group of high school aged interns at CPL, Gamer’s Universe features a packed day of programming for players and fans of every level. From cosplay contests and live gaming competitions to hands-on demos of original games designed by teens, the event highlights the creativity, collaboration and innovation that define today’s gaming community.
“Gamer’s Universe is what happens when we trust teens to lead—and support them every step of the way,” said Commissioner Chris Brown. “Our teens will transform Harold Washington Library into a one-day arcade: joyful, inclusive, and open to all. With guidance from our YOUmedia mentors and staff, this is a powerful example of what libraries make possible—creativity, safety, and real community connection.”
CTGG is part of CPL’s broader effort to empower teens through creative expression and career exploration. The internship allows participants to lead every aspect of planning the convention from budgeting and design to vendor outreach and event production.
"My experience this year has been very fulfilling in terms of organizing and planning this year's convention!” says Ira, a teen intern who has been part of Gamer’s Universe since it was first started four years ago. “As someone who loves to plan things, I had the pleasure of exploring the process of organizing a real-life experience. I got to learn how to utilize budgets, make connections to many different people, create fun events and so much more. I hope visitors are able to find a new exciting experience that creates a lasting memory!"
This year’s Gamer’s Universe builds on the success of previous years with even more to experience. Attendees can explore original games created by CTGG teens, play popular titles at gaming stations set up throughout the building, join in competitive matches and connect with others at the cosplay contest. The event also offers resources to help participants dive deeper into Chicagoland’s growing gaming scene.
This event is free and open to the public, made possible by the generous support of donors to the Chicago Public Library Foundation. To learn more and reserve your spot, visit chipublib.org/gamersuniverse, opens a new window.
