Celebrate Shakespeare 400 with Performances, Workshops

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.

—Shakespeare, Sonnet 18, lines 1-4

Just because it’s hot outside doesn’t mean we’ve stopped celebrating Shakespeare 400, the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death. In fact, things are just heating up!

There's no pre-reading required for Theatre Y's Macbeth events at CPL locations around the city. Each features a performance of a scene from the play followed by a discussion with the audience.

Girls 10 to 16 can get in on the action with the Viola Project’s Shakespeare Workshops. Participants will learn about Twelfth Night and get a chance to dig deeper into the characters before performing a scene from the play.

Albany Park Branch's Korean Language Book Club will discuss On Such a Full Sea by Chang-rae Lee on July 28. The dystopian novel takes its title and themes from Julius Caesar.

Beginning July 30, come take a look at a fantastic display of historic Shakespeare performances with our new Shakespeare in Chicago exhibit in the Congress Corridor of Harold Washington Library Center.

And if any of these events inspires you to learn more, we have plenty of books about Shakespeare and works by Shakespeare for you to explore!
