Abstract

Archive documenting the work of Ted Liss, a Chicago actor, teacher and director. Liss was the founder of the Chicago Equity Library Theater, the Ted Liss School of Performing Arts and the Ted Liss Studio Actors Workshop. The collection includes biographical files on Liss, information on the studio and school of performing arts, a financial series and a selection of commercial scripts.

Biographical/Historical

Ted Liss, founder and director of the Ted Liss School of Performing Arts, began his dramatic career in radio at the age of 12 at WGN. In 1933 he played at the Globe Theatre in the Century of Progress Exposition, then went on to California to play the lead in Golden Boy with the Group Theatre and perform with the Max Reinhardt Professional Company. Mr. Liss was a contract player under Warner Brothers and also produced, directed and acted for Army Special Services and the Armed Radio Network.

After the war, he returned to Chicago and became known to many Chicagoans as Mark Jordan in the radio serial Guiding Light. Mr. Liss appeared in and produced Cyrano and Medea on CBS Repertory Theatre and directed the first television production of Julius Caesar in 1946. He then took the position as head of the drama department at the Radio Institute of Chicago.

Mr. Liss was a co-founder of the Chicago Equity Library Theatre in the early 1950s. He was the first resident director of the Country Club Theatre in Mt. Prospect and directed more than 300 professional and community theatre productions in the Chicago area.

Mr. Liss was well known as one of the nation's leading commercial ‘voice- over’ actors and announcers. In 1985, Mayor Harold Washington declared December 2, 1985, to be Ted Liss Day in Chicago.

The Ted Liss School of Performing Arts and the Ted Liss Studio Actors Workshop, both located at 1529 N. Wells Street, offered classes in mime, movement, scene work, improvisation and voice. The program of the classes differed from other acting schools in Liss’s emphasis on combining craft and business. He saw a continual give and take between the commercial and aesthetic sides of the theater and saw the school as an artists’ apprenticing workshop rather than a place where he simply taught acting.

In 1986, he started the Rejoice Repertory, an Equity company with Workshop members, where he directed plays, including Born Yesterday and Medea.

Ted Liss died in March of 1992 at the age of 72.
