Abstract

The compiler of this scrapbook remains anonymous. She attended a wide range of plays, operas and concerts. The scrapbook is annotated and includes reviews, clippings and occasionally pictures.

Biographical/Historical

The unknown compiler of this scrapbook attended a wide range of plays, operas and concerts.

The volume was likely given its name by Chicago collector and Chicago Tribune “Line O Type” columnist Max Maier. “Scrapbook of a Matinee (sic) Girl circa 1908” appears on the title page in what is believed to be Maier’s handwriting, which is quite different from that of the compiler. Several of the early pages are annotated with both handwriting scripts.

Scope and Contents

The scrapbook, compiled on lined notebook paper and bound in a three-ring binder, is of interest both for its contents and its association to Meier. The unknown compiler attended a wide range of plays, operas and concerts, and although she generally clipped away the theater names and dates from programs, she noted the information on the scrapbook pages. The scrapbook includes reviews and clippings, and occasionally pictures.

Arrangement

The scrapbook remains bound in its original order. The collection inventory is organized alphabetically by production title. An asterisk indicates a production mounted outside Chicago.

Separated Materials

When originally processed, seven programs: The Girl in the Grandstand, The Fortune Hunter, Der Kellermeister, The Man From Home, The Mousetrap Peddler [Der Mausfallen Haendler] and The Standard Club Follies (1908 and 1909) were removed from the scrapbook and replaced with photocopies. These programs have since been added to the Chicago Theater Collection-Historical Programs Collection.
