Abstract
Robert Shook’s award-winning lighting designs have been seen at many of Chicagoland’s theaters, as well as throughout the city along Michigan Avenue and illuminating many of the city’s known works of public art. The collection contains annotated scripts and drawings for theatrical productions along with some accompanying materials. Also included is a small collection of plans and production materials from the Notre Dame High School for Girls created by Shook’s wife, Leslie.
Biographical/Historical
Robert Shook’s career as a lighting designer in Chicago spanned over three decades and ranged from theatrical productions to outdoor lighting of city landmarks and public artworks. From designs for university venues to larger off-Loop commercial theaters, Shook has designed lighting for over a hundred productions.
The son of a disc jockey, Shook grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he studied journalism at Kentucky’s Murray State University for two years before transferring to the Goodman School of Drama (then part of the Art Institute of Chicago). In 1971, he graduated from Goodman with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Shook continued his education by obtaining a master’s degree in production design from Ohio University. His first production after graduating from Ohio was Rashomon at the Court Theatre, followed by three more shows for Victory Gardens Theater.
During his career, Shook designed the lighting for productions at Apollo Theater, Body Politic Theatre, Chicago Opera Theater, Drury Lane Theatre at Water Tower Place, Equity Library Theater, Forum Theatre, Goodman Stage 2 and Goodman’s Children’s Theater, Lithuanian Opera Company of Chicago, Northlight Repertory, Piven Theater Workshop, St. Nicholas Theater, Travel Light Theatre and the Woodstock Music Festival. Further afield, he also designed lighting schemes for theaters in Indiana, Louisiana, Nevada, Wisconsin and Texas. Shook also worked as a consultant for the fledgling Court Theatre and Victory Gardens Theater as well as several other theater-design projects in the city and suburbs.
In addition to theatrical design, Shook teamed up with Duane Schuler to take on the challenge of lighting the aardvarks exhibit at the Brookfield Zoo. Since this first dual project Schuler and Shook designed lighting for several important Chicago landmarks such as the Untitled sculpture by Pablo Picasso in Daley Plaza; Four Seasons, the mosaic by Marc Chagall in the Chase Tower plaza; Flamingo, the Alexander Calder sculpture in the Federal Plaza; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Chicago Water Tower; the Alexander Hamilton Monument in Lincoln Park; and the Shedd Aquarium. Along with an architectural firm, Schuler and Shook assisted in the 1998 Chicago Downtown Lighting Master Plan, initiated by Mayor Richard M. Daley.
Shook’s designs won recognition with three Joseph Jefferson citation recommendations and one Jeff Award nomination for The Caretakers at Victory Gardens. In 2003 Robert Shook, along with his company Schuler and Shook, won an Award of Merit during the 20th Annual International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Lighting Design Awards.

Also included is a small collection of plans and production materials from the Notre Dame High School for Girls created by Shook’s wife, Leslie.
