Organizational History

The Founder, Prince Hall (1735-1738—1807), and Black Freemasonry Origins

Prince Hall Freemasonry is the oldest black (of African descent) freemasonry order in existence. Prince Hall Freemasonry began in Boston, Massachusetts in 1775 during the Revolutionary War (1775–1783). Prince Hall, a leather dresser believed to originally be born in Barbados, along with fourteen other free (not freeborn but freed slaves) black men—Peter Best, Cuff Bufform, John Carter, Peter Freeman, Fortune Howard, Cyrus Jonbus, Prince Rees Thomas Sanderson, Buesten Singer, Boston Smith, Cato Spean, Prince Taylor, Benjamin Tiber, and Richard Tilley—enlisted in the British Army. During their enlistment in a black regiment under General Gage, these fifteen men were instructed in the ways of the freemason and initiated into freemasonry by John Batts, a white enlisted man in an Irish regiment and a member of the mobile military lodge (Lodge No. 441).

Not long after their indoctrination into the fraternal order, Prince Hall and his fellow black freemason brethren sought out their own charter. Although it came with limitations, their charter received permit by Grand Master John Rowe of the St. John’s Provincial Grand Lodge in 1779, establishing the freemasons as African Lodge No.1 with Prince Hall as their Master. With the creation of African Lodge No.1, black freemasons were able to assemble, bury their dead, and participate in certain public functions such as marching in the St. John’s parade. Unfortunately, the lodge and its members met the same difficulties of racial segregation and oppression as other black men. Members were often not recognized by their white fraternal brothers and were restricted from the same powers and privileges as white masons and masonic lodges, such as conferring masonic degrees.

Finding no remedy from its establishing Grand Lodge in Boston and in order to obtain the same power and privilege as any other mason and masonic lodge, Prince Hall and the other members of African Lodge No. 1 sought out a warrant through Master M. Moody of Master of the Perseverance Lodge, No. 398 in London. The Grand Lodge of England later granted African Lodge No.1 the empowering warrant it sought in 1784 and by 1787 this warrant was delivered to African Lodge No. 1 in Boston. [African Lodge No.1’s name was changed to African Lodge No. 459 with Prince Hall serving as Worshipful Master.]

In 1791, African Lodge No. 459 became the first black Provincial Grand Lodge and Prince Hall as its Grand Master was elevated to the title of Provincial Grand Master. In 1797, Prince Hall organized two lodges under African Lodge No. 459’s charter—one in Philadelphia and one in Rhode Island. One year after Prince Hall’s death, the African Lodges in Boston, Philadelphia and Rhode Island organized into the African Grand Lodge. In 1827, African Grand Lodge declared its independence from the United Grand Lodge of England and in 1847 in honor of their founder, changed their name to Prince Hall Grand Lodge.

Prince Hall Freemasonry and the Community

Prince Hall Freemasonry has always been deeply connected and invested in the cultural, social, political, and economic development and stability of the black community. The black freemason was to be of the highest quality of men; those who seek enlightenment and possessed the qualifications to lead and to help diagnose the ills of society and best help heal these ills; those with a profound respect for brotherhood and loyalty who see all as part of their circle in equal and varying degrees; those with the humility and empathy to care for those who need uplifting and guidance; those suited to effect change and bring prosperity; and those of virtue and strength who can build strong communities and reinforce them through advocacy.

As such, Prince Hall was a strong advocate for the abolishment of slavery. Using his position as a free black man and mason, he often appealed to the court for the freeing of black slaves. He and his membership always strove to better the state of black man’s life whether it be through education, masonic instruction or other virtuous endeavors. Prince Hall sought to elevate the black community in varying degrees.

Prince Hall Freemasonry and Its Affiliates

Prince Hall Freemasonries were comprised of a network of affiliates. Prince Hall Freemasonry understood not only the importance of lifting up its brethren, but how the partnership of marriage and the bonds of family were also vital to a man’s quality and virtue. As Prince Hall Freemasonry was a fraternal order, it was undeniable that a freemason’s family should also be versed in the rituals and practice of the freemason in order to help their patriarch stay the course of his craft.

Thus the Order of the Eastern Star was founded in 1874, to instruct the freemason’s wife, sisters, daughters and nieces in intelligent participation in civic, national and international affairs. The Order of the Eastern Star further provided support to their masonic brothers in their endeavors to help build the black community and further Prince Hall Freemasonry. The Order of the Eastern Star met with difficulties under women rights but eventually immerged as a crucial organization to black female leadership.

Prince Hall Freemasonry also understood the importance of disseminating information not just with in its own lodges and jurisdictions but amongst black freemasons across the country. The 1970s was a period of research, investigation and communication. Several masonic publications began circulation via subscription including The Lamp and The Masonic Quarterly. The need to keep the channels of masonic information open and flowing among brothers across the country not just in their own jurisdiction led to the birth of the Phylaxis Society; a black freemasonry organization of Prince Hall editors, writers and historians. The Phylaxis Society is committed to further Prince Hall Freemasonry through masonic research. The Phylaxis Society began its own masonic publication based on their research and endeavors in the Phylaxis. The Phylaxis transcended its boundaries as a masonic publication in the United States, being received well globally in England, Germany and France.

Prince Hall Freemasonry has a host of affiliate organization that they often refer to as concordant bodies. Each concordant body plays or has played a significant role in the advancement of Prince Hall Freemasonry as a whole.

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois (MWPHGIL)

The Prince Hall Grand Lodge was formed in 1867 from Lodges within the State of Illinois that were chartered by the Prince Hall Affiliated Grand Lodge of Ohio. Those included North Star Lodge #12 of Chicago, Illinois (chartered in 1852), Griffin T. Watson Lodge #16 of Alton, Illinois (chartered in 1856), and Central Lodge #19 of Springfield, Illinois (chartered in 1857). The three Lodges met in Springfield on February 15, 1867 to form a Grand Lodge for the State of Illinois. The three lodges later convened in Springfield on May 6, 1867 to hold a special session to announce the grand lodge’s formation. As of 2016, Illinois has approximately 69 subordinate lodges with more than 40 of the lodges in Chicago.

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois (MWPHGIL) continues the traditions of Prince Hall Freemasonry and its commitments to the community and social activism. Many of its founding members were abolitionists during slavery and their Grand Master was involved in the fight to pass the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendments to the United States Constitution. They helped in the relief efforts of the Chicago Fire (1871) and the Great Depression of the 1930s and created two youth organizations between the 1922 – 1938 (Order of the Bees for Boys and Girls and The Junior Craftsmen).

The MWPHGIL and their chapters continue to partner with community organizations like the Ada S. McKinney, the National Urban League and the United Negro College Fund to provide awards and other services to black youth. Continuing the Prince Hall Freemasons long history of service to the country, many of the brethren served in the Spanish-American War (1898), World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945).
