Scope and Content

Since the compiler of this delightful set of scrapbooks is as yet unidentified, it has been named for the scrapbooks themselves – sturdy, buckram-bound quarto volumes titled “Plays and Players: A Theatre-Goer’s Record.” Designed especially for the purpose and published by Brewer, Barse & Co. of Chicago and related firms, these scrapbooks and others like them have been used by several collectors in this archive.

This compiler of Plays and Players, Series 1 enjoyed opera, concerts, dance, and vaudeville as well as all types of legitimate theater. Though she rarely records her own opinions about performances, she has been unusually assiduous in collecting newspaper reviews and commentary. Pictorial material is also included.
