Provenance: The collection was originally housed in Chicago Public Library's Legler Branch Library. In the 1980s Special Collections, working with a Dr. Scholl Foundation grant, transferred and processed the collection to make it fully available to the public. Photographs 1.104-1.114 were found in the collection and added in 2018.

Historical Note

The North Lawndale neighborhood is 5 miles west of the Loop at the city's border with Cicero. The area was annexed into Chicago in stages, the eastern sections in 1869 and the other sections in 1889. North Lawndale is number 29 of the 77 official communities that make up Chicago.

Series 1: Biographical Data, 1880s-1947.

This series consists of newspaper clippings and biographical sketches, for the most part, and is dominated by materials related to the career or Otto Eisenschiml, a North Lawndale manufacturer and author who was very active in the West Side Historical Society. The series is arranged alphabetically by last name.

Series 2: Business Establishments, 1905-1939.

This modest series is composed of a brochure, a newspaper clipping, a flyer, and a bank statement from the North Lawndale business community. It is arranged alphabetically by business name.

Series 3: Religious Institutions: 1912-1945.

This series consists of newspaper clippings and programs, and is arranged alphabetically by name. Some of the programs are in German.

Series 4: Clubs and Organizations, 1924-1959.

This series includes newspaper clippings, membership materials, newsletters, flyers, and programs, and is arranged alphabetically by club name.

Series 5: Historical Sketches and Essays, 1938.

This minute series contains just one item: an anonymous essay on early settlers in the Garfield Park-Lawndale area.

Series 6: Parks, 1872.

This series contains several pictures of Douglas Park.

Series 7: Schools, 1910-1956.

In this series are found programs, school newspapers, yearbooks, newspaper clippings, class lists, identifications to photographs, and other materials, arranged alphabetically by school name.

Series 8: Wartime Activities, 1940.

This series houses only one item, a flyer with a patriotic poem written by a North Lawndale resident.
