Biographical Note

May Johnson was an agent for musicians from violinists to opera singers. Her career spanned at least three decades. She was working in Chicago in the early 1910s representing artists in conjunction with the Chicago Grand Opera Company (later known as the Chicago Opera Company). In 1917-1918, her office was at 50 West 67th Street, New York City. By the late 1930s she was again in Chicago with offices at Orchestra Hall.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of materials assembled by May Johnson as agent for various artists. The bulk of the collection concerns the careers of violinist Zlatko Balokovic (1895-1965) and soprano Eleonora de Cisneros (1874-1934). Material regarding Balokovic includes carbon copies of Johnson’s letters to him as well as publicity photographs. The de Cisneros material also includes photos and work that she did with the musical Out There, a fundraiser for the American Red Cross in 1918.

One of the most valuable components of the collection is the photograph series. A number of these photos date from the early seasons of the Chicago Grand Opera Company, 1910-1914. Manuscripts of the first two general managers of this Company are also present in this collection: J. Andreas Dippel (folder 1:31) and Cleofonte Campanini (folder 1:12). Photographs are listed at the end of the Container List.

Arrangement

Series 1 contains materials pertaining to Balokovic, Zlatko (1895-1965) and Joyce Borden; Series 2 contains materials related to Eleonora de Cisneros (1874-1934), and Series 3 contains materials related to Rosa Raisa. Photographs are at the end of the Container List.
