Lawndale-Crawford Community Collection

Dates: 1875-1979
Size: 2.25 linear feet, 755 photographs, 26 oversize folders
Repository: Chicago Public Library, Harold Washington Library Center, Special Collections, 400 S. State St., Chicago, IL 60605
Collection Number: Archives_LCCC
Provenance: The papers that comprise the Lawndale-Crawford Community Collection were gathered together by members of the Lawndale-Crawford Historical Association throughout its existence (1934-present). The association was organized in the Fall of 1934 to commemorate the earlier settlers of the area, stimulate and maintain interest in neighborhood history, and establish a close relationship with the Chicago Public Library, which organized the society. In 1981, the Special Collections Division of the Chicago Public library received a grant from the Dr. Scholl Foundation to preserve several of the neighborhood historical collections found in many of the branch libraries. The Lawndale-Crawford Community Collection was processed as part of this grant. Additional material continues to be added through transfer or donation.

Supplement 1, processed January 1989

The materials in Supplement 1 consist of items transferred from the Toman Branch Library after the original processing of this collection. The bulk of this material is comprised of land title abstracts dated 1873-1905, concerning property in the Lawndale-Crawford area (5:29-33).

Of particular note are two folders ( 5:27-28 ) concerning Thomas Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937), Czechoslovak president who lived for a short time with a Lawndale-Crawford family in 1918-1919 while on faculty at the University of Chicago. The presence of a large Czechoslovakian community in the Lawndale-Crawford neighborhood prompted the Toman Library to collect heavily in the history and culture of Czechoslovakia; this Czech collection at Toman bore Masaryk's name in his honor.

Supplement 2, processed October 1989

Supplement 2 consists of two yearbooks and a student scrapbook relating to Harrison Technical High School, 1920-1924 and 1931. The scrapbook and 1924 yearbook were the property of HTHS student Dorothy Alter; the 1931 yearbook belonged to her brother Morris. Harrison Technical High School no longer exists. These items are found in folders 6:1 to 6:3.

These materials were received by Special Collections via anonymous donation in May, 1988. This donation included a yearbook for Herzl Junior High School, which has been cataloged as part of the North Lawndale Community Collection, see NL 2:8a.

Supplement 3, processed June 1992

Supplement 3 is primarily composed of materials related to the PTA of the Robert Burns School. It was a gift to the Toman Branch Library, and transferred to Special Collections in July, 1991.

Supplement 4, processed January 2019

PHOTOGRAPHS

Photographs numbered 2.1 through 2.32 were received at the same time as those numbered with a prefix of "1." It is unclear why they were missed in the original enumeration of LCCC photos.

2.12 through 2.32 are photographs of Lawndale-Crawford groups. Many are identified person-by-person. They are listed here by main entry only.

Photographs numbered 3.1 through 3.4 are glass plate slides for which there are no corresponding paper prints in the LCCC collection. There are many other glass plates in the collection which are assigned the catalog number of the paper copy.

Photographs numbered 4.1 through 4.46 were on loan when the original collection was cataloged and were therefore missed in the series cataloged under prefix "1."

Photographs 5.1 through 5.5 are proof sheets made from some thirty negatives found in an envelope marked "Toman Branch Library." These images date from the time of World War II as evidenced by various photos of the South Lawndale Victory Garden. Largely unidentified, these images are numbered only by proof sheets and listed under "Wartime."
