Abstract

Lake View High School, located at the corner of Ashland Avenue and Irving Park Road, was the first high school in Lake View Township. The history of the school is documented in this collection, which includes early annual reports, newspaper clippings, and programs and ephemera from school events. The collection also includes a run of the school’s Red and White yearbook, Lake Re View newspaper, and photographs.

Biographical/Historical

Lake View High School, one of the oldest township high schools in Illinois, was built in 1874 on the corner of Graceland Avenue (now Irving Park Road) and Ashland Avenue. The Graceland Cemetery Company donated the land for the specific purpose of building an educational institution that would prepare young men and women for college or the business world.

The original structure was a small two-story frame building. The first class to attend LVHS consisted of only eight students for a faculty of six teachers. In 1885 the high school was destroyed by fire, but a year later was reopened in new and larger quarters on the same site.

In 1889 Lake View Township was incorporated into the City of Chicago, and the high school came under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Public School system. The growth and development of the community, which followed, saw an increase in student enrollment. This caused further expansion of the facilities in 1898 and again in 1916 and 1939. The school was renovated again in 2018.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains early annual reports, newspaper clippings, and programs and ephemera from school events. It also includes a run of the school’s Red and White yearbook, the Lake Re View newspaper, and a few miscellaneous school publications. The final series contains photographs, which mostly depict Lake View High School students, including class photos and images of activities and athletics. There are also a few images of the building and faculty.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in four series:

Series 1: General Historical Files, 1875-1980, undated

Series 2: Programs and Activities, 1874-circa 1996

Series 3: Publications, circa 1897-2002

Scope and Contents

This series, the largest in the collection, includes issues of the student newspaper, the Lake Re View; the yearbook, the Red and White; and a few literary magazines and handbooks.

Coverage of the Lake Re View includes both loose issues in oversize folders and bound volumes. In many cases there is not complete coverage within the date range given for an oversize folder.

In the 1900s-1920s, the Red and White published multiple issues each year. The June edition was generally a longer, more traditional yearbook. Issues for the other months were shorter and more closely resemble literary magazines or school newsletters.
