Biographical Note

Tom Creamer has served as Dramaturg for the Goodman Theatre since 1986. He has worked on Robert Falls' productions of The Iceman Cometh , The Tempest , Death of a Salesman , Long Day's Journey Into Night , and King Lear ; JoAnne Akalaitis's production of 'Tis Pity She's a Whore ; Frank Galati's productions of The Winter's Tale and The Good Person of Setzuan ; Michael Maggio's productions of Romeo & Juliet , As You Like It and A Midsummer Night's Dream ; David Petrarca's productions of Mill Fire and Marvin's Room as well as Red Noses and The Rover . His adaptation of A Christmas Carol , presented by the Goodman since 1989, has also appeared at Rockford's New American Theatre and the Wagon Wheel Playhouse. His translation, with Siri Senje, of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler was produced by the Guthrie in 1984 and by Chicago's Touchstone Theatre in 1988. He created staged adaptations of Mark Twain's Roughing It and Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie , both for Touchstone. Mr. Creamer has taught adaptation for the stage at Chicago Dramatists Workshop and theater history at DePaul and Roosevelt Universities. Before coming to Chicago, he was literary manager of the Empty Space Theatre in Seattle and worked as dramaturg at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.

Scope and Content

The Creamer collection contains production scripts of plays presented at the Goodman Theatre between 1985 and 1996. Supporting the scripts are research materials, photographs, and audiocassettes relating to research in the Dramaturg's office.

The collection has been arranged into one series (Research Materials) and two sub-series (Audio Cassettes, and Photographs and Slides). Each series is arranged chronologically by production. A small number of materials in outdated formats (i.e. 5 ¼" floppy disks) have been removed; an inventory of those materials is available.

Research materials include photocopied articles and book chapters pertaining to Goodman productions, as well as reviews, correspondence, interview recordings and transcripts, and drafts of the Goodman's newsletter, OnStage . Also included in this series are oversize materials, which while separated physically from the manuscript material, are noted with their respective productions and also listed at the end of the Box and Folder Inventory.
