Abstract

Free Street Theater was organized in 1969 by Goodman School of Drama graduate, Patrick Henry (1936-1989) as part of cooperative project with the Illinois Arts Council. The grant-funded and donation-supported theater gave free performances focused on contemporary themes, meant to bring together different ages, races and socio-economic groups. Free Street performed across Chicago and toured both nationally and internationally. The records include the theater’s administrative and operational files, its production and program files, and its touring activity. The records include Free Street Too which featured senior citizen actors.

Biographical/Historical

Free Street Theater’s “theater of the people” was primarily the vision of the late Patrick Henry (1936-1989). A graduate of the Goodman School of Drama, it was Henry who brought the theater to life in 1969 with joint funding from the Goodman and Illinois Arts Council. Free Street Theater’s first mission was “to bring theater to the streets and to people of all ages, social and economic groups.” It successfully met its mission by taking theater out to the communities using “portable ‘showmobiles,’ that toured the parks, alleys and empty lots of city neighborhoods.” Free Street did not charge admission, and created productions on contemporary themes, engendering better communication among races, social strata and age groups. Free Street’s focus on outreach drew not only the regular theatergoer, but also audiences that did not normally attend theatrical performances. In 1976, the theater expanded with Free Street Too and staged a series of shows that focused on senior issues and featured a cast of senior actors. The theater group functioned on a year-round ad-hoc basis.

Free Street Theater operated under the mission that “teaches acting and creative writing skills to youth so they can open their potential to be creative, active participants in their own lives.” In addition to theatrical performances, Free Street developed and implemented a range of educational, workshop, seminars and special programs in schools, parks, prisons and corporate settings.

Free Street productions are original creations and often continued to be performed for years. Among the notable productions was Project!: A Musical Documentary conceived in collaboration with the residents at the Cabrini Green Homes. Project! attracted national attention when it premiered in 1985 and went on to sell-out theaters in London when it went on tour.

Scope and Contents

The Free Street Theater Collection documents the theater organization from plans predating its inception in 1969 through its programs and initiatives in 1999. The records Free Street’s administrative, operational, production and artistic work. The materials include annual reports, board of directors’ correspondence and minutes, grants and fundraising, promotional initiatives, artistic statements, company histories and biographies, program plans and proposals, scripts and scores, reviews and touring files. The production history and artistic development includes such Free Street shows as Celebrate the City, Dummy, INK (Interesting News for Kids), Multiples of Man, Project!, Puppets & People, Take the Chance and Wandering Minstrels, We. Files also document Free Street’s programs, including such initiatives as Arts Literacy, Parenteen, Prison Programs, Teen Street and its senior citizen company, Free Street Too.

Processing Note

In an effort to make this collection available to you more quickly, some of the materials were only minimally processed. Some material reflects its original order as received and contents within folders may not be in chronological or other order. Researchers may encounter records of a sensitive nature. Privacy laws and/or other restrictions may prohibit the use of names and other personal information which might identify an individual, except with written permission.

Appraisal Note

The original finding aid was reviewed in 2024. The collection box numbers were made sequential. Previous box numbering started over with each series. The collection contents were reviewed for sensitive information, dates were inserted for file descriptions, and photographs and posters were integrated into the collection guide. The bulk of the original collection processing was retained.
