Abstract

D.E. (David Edward) Terriere was a longtime resident of the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago who worked as a banker at the Englewood Bank. His 37 handwritten diary entries, although brief, offer glimpses at his family life, household financial transactions and activities in the city. One of the diaries from 1900 was kept by Terriere’s mother-in-law, Anna Elizabeth Correll of Niles, Michigan.

Biographical/Historical

D.E. (David Edward) Terriere was a resident of the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. Born in New York on March 26, 1838 and raised in Michigan, Terriere moved to Chicago in 1868 at the age of 30. He first found work as a book keeper and store keeper at the Union Stock Yard and Transit Company (1868-1884), before opening Beckwith & Terriere, a short-lived hay, grain and feed business. On May 1, 1886 the Englewood Bank hired him as a cashier. Terrier remained with the bank for more than twenty years. David Terriere died on June 25, 1914 and was buried in Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles, Michigan.

Ann Eliza Terriere [nee Correll or Corell] was born in Pennsylvania, circa 1842. She wed David Edward Terriere at a ceremony in Niles, Michigan on January 26, 1861. They had five children: Charles Corell, George, Harry Ward, Charlotte and Harriette Edna. Ann Terriere died in Chicago on June 11, 1923. She too was buried in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains 37 handwritten pocket-size diaries created by Chicago resident D.E. (David Edward) Terriere from 1870 to 1913. Diaries from the years 1871, 1881 and 1905-1908 are missing. Although economical with words, Terriere’s entries offer a view of his family life and include records of his financial transactions for everyday purposes such as train fare, household expenses or entertainments as well as the sums given to his wife for other purchases. The entries often note specific routes or transit methods that he has taken to arrive at a destination, but seldom offer many details of events, his places of work or those with whom he dined. Terriere’s diaries, however, provide a glimpse into the activities of middle class Chicago citizen and business person. He notes election days, visits to the 1873 Inter-State Industrial Exposition of Chicago and the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, fireworks on the 4th of July, family picnics, baseball games, severe weather and other activities, though always with few words; for example,

Bank not open today. Dedication of Columbian Exposition. Allie Carroll and Hattie were at fair all day. I took wife, mother and Allie Carroll for a ride. I went to see fireworks in Washington Park in the eve.

The collection also contains a diary kept by Mrs. Terriere’s mother, Anna Elizabeth Correll of Niles, Michigan for the year 1900. She notes that the diary was given to her as a gift by David Terriere. Her entries describe family relations along with her regular butter production, possibly for the country store Terriere & Perrott, and other domestic duties.

Arrangement

The diaries are arranged chronologically with the one kept by Anna Elizabeth Correll at the end.
