Abstract

Photographs in this collection document the activities, structures and staff of the Chicago Public Library’s neighborhood branch system from 1885 through 2014. Formats include glass plate slides, transparencies, slides, prints, negatives, contact sheets and snapshots.

Biographical/Historical

Chicago Public Library (CPL) opened to the public on January 1, 1873, in a Reading Room at the corner of Adams and LaSalle Streets in Chicago’s Loop. Within a few years, efforts were made to open locations in neighborhoods where the public could more easily access library materials without having to come downtown. Delivery stations were established in several neighborhoods where residents could order books at a local merchant’s store, and these books would be delivered to them several days later. Small collections of books, called deposit stations, were established, and placed in some neighborhood park fieldhouses for residents to use, and others were deposited in factories and warehouses across the city for their workers. Delivery and deposit stations were popular but not ideal. Delivery station services were slow and not evenly dispersed across the city, leaving vast areas without any library service at all. Deposit station collections were small, limited in scope, and were not refreshed very often, leaving many readers frustrated. Some high schools received “libraries” for the use of their students, but they were staffed by Board of Education employees rather than CPL employees, and this led to tension and inefficiencies. In 1890, CPL opened its first “branch” library on Milwaukee Avenue, just south of North Avenue, in a rented storefront, which was staffed by CPL employees. In the first fifty or so years of public library service in Chicago, CPL used a combination of all these systems to try to get books into the hands of borrowers across the length and breadth of the city. The Regional Plan of 1916 laid the groundwork for the current system of regional and branch libraries, and over time, this led to a focused plan to coordinate and expand library service to the neighborhoods, resulting in more efficient delivery systems and increased usage. As resources increased, CPL moved away from delivery stations, deposit stations and high school libraries toward more efficient and longer-lasting branch libraries.

Scope and Contents

Photographs in this collection document the activities, structures and staff of the Chicago Public Library’s neighborhood branch system from 1885 through 2014. Formats include glass plate slides, transparencies, slides, prints, negatives, and snapshots. Many of the images show construction of new buildings, renovations of existing buildings, public artworks on display, events and programs of all types and for all ages, and of staff. Many more simply show the public using their libraries.

The earliest photographs were taken by professional photographic studios and were used for promotional purposes. Most of the photographs and slides that date from the 1970s through around 2005 were taken by CPL’s inhouse staff photographers, Gary Degnan and Phil Moloitis. As well as documenting the day-to-day activities inside a branch library, they also show key events, such as renovations and reopening celebrations; construction of new buildings and dedication events; community activities such as parades; and library staff. By the early 1990s, color snapshots, mostly taken by branch staff, were donated and have been added to the collection.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged alphabetically by the name of the branch, then chronological within each location. Undated photographs are listed at the end of each branch. If a branch has undergone a name change, for example Lake View Branch was renamed Merlo Branch in 1993, the description lists the second name in square brackets.
