Historical Note

The Chicago Millennium Collection documents the events planned by the City of Chicago to mark the beginning of the third millennium. Originally planned to last three years (from January 1999 through the end of 2001) the celebration was cut short in January 2000 due to financial problems (see “Closeout, 2000,” Box 4 Folder 5).

While the City recognized that the new millennium did not officially begin until January 1, 2001, it was felt that a 3-year celebration that covered the beginning of the year 2000 would have a broader appeal.

The Chicago Millennium Celebration was spearheaded by the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) but many non-city agencies, such as the Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, Chicago Chamber Musicians, Newberry Library, Chicago Historical Society, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, were directly involved. Partnering City agencies included the Department on Aging, Mayor’s Office of Special Events, Chicago Public Library, Chicago Park District, and Navy Pier. City agencies that were involved to a lesser extent include the Department of Aviation, Chicago Transit Authority, Department of the Environment, Business and Information Services, Department of Police, and the Chicago Fire Department.

DCA organized a number of projects to be celebrated over the 3-year period, primarily Dance ‘til the Dawn of the New Millennium, Year 2000 Themes, and an International Millennium Dinner held on New Year’s Eve, 1999. Two other major components of the Chicago Millennium Celebration were the Field Museum’s “Project Millennium” and the City of Chicago’s “Millennium Park.” Researchers therefore should also consult the Field Museum for their holdings. At time of processing (May 2002) Millennium Park is under construction and there is no documentation on this project in this collection.

Scope and Content

The Chicago Millennium Collection consists of the files generated primarily by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). Most of the files are organized by project but there is a significant amount of general information at the beginning of the collection that relates to the celebration as a whole. Series 1 contains DCA Planning Files. The three main projects undertaken by DCA are the Dance ‘til the Dawn of the New Millennium, the International Millennium Dinner, and the Year 2000 Themes, Series 2-4 respectively.

Series 1: Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) Planning Files

Series 2: Dance ‘til the Dawn of the New Millennium

This was a citywide New Year’s Eve celebration featuring 2000 minutes of dance activities (from 9am on December 31, 1999 until 6:20pm on January 1, 2000). People of all ages, nationalities and in every community were invited to “dance in” the new millennium with dance parties, dance lessons and performances of every kind of dancing. An important aspect of this project was “The Milly,” a specially commissioned song and dance that the City hoped all Chicagoans would be dancing as New Year struck.

Series 2 has information about participating venues, participating professional and amateur dance troupes, and the logistics of coordinating and promoting such a large event. There is a small amount of documentation regarding grants and costs.

Series 3: International Millennium Dinner

The dinner was the result of an idea sent to the City via email from Bernadino de Vincenzi of Italy (Box 8, Folder 1). His idea was to invite two people from each country in the world to Chicago for dinner. 178 countries participated (more were invited but were unable to participate) and a dinner was held in McCormick Place on New Year’s Eve 1999.

Series 3 has information regarding the steps necessary to transport so many people to Chicago (visa requirements, special dietary needs, religious requirements, clothing needs, medical insurance coverage, etc.) and plans for their time spent in the city. For privacy reasons pages copied from guests’ passports have been removed by the archivist and are closed to researchers until 2052. Permission to view these documents before this date must be obtained in writing from the City of Chicago’s Freedom of Information office. Please see the archivist on duty for assistance. Photographs of the guests from each country have been kept in that country’s file.

Series 4: Year 2000 Themes

This project intended to celebrate 12 different aspects of Chicago over the course of 2000. Each month had a theme and events and programs were planned to highlight each month’s theme. Unfortunately due to budgetary problems this initiative was canceled in January 2000 (Box 4, Folder 5).

Series 5: Other Projects

Other projects in this collection include: Project Millennium (researchers should also consult holdings in the Field Museum for this project); New Year’s Eve Fireworks; Chicago Snapshot; 2000 Priceless Sensory Experiences; Postmark 1999; and several other small millennium-related projects.

There is a significant audio-visual component to this collection, with photographs, videos, CDs, and cassettes. There is also a small collection of promotional artifacts. The A-V and artifacts are listed at the end of the box and folder inventory.

Arrangement

Original organization has been maintained as far as possible. The collection is organized by project, with general information at the beginning. With the exception of photographs of the guests for the International Millennium Dinner, all audio-visual material has been separated and listed at the end of the papers. Where possible there is a “see also” reference for researchers to also check holdings in the AV series. Similarly, oversized material has been separated and individual files have been marked as such. Three-dimensional objects were included with the donation and items that related to Box 1, Folder 36, “Official Logomark, John Massey (U.I.C.) Students’ Projects” have been photographed and returned to U.I.C. There is a small amount of artifacts in this collection, mostly promotional pieces and they are listed at the end of the finding guide.

Provenance

At the very early stages of planning for the new millennium the City of Chicago was aware of the need to preserve these files for the historical record. There was very little recorded of how the City celebrated the Bicentennial in 1976 or its own Sesquicentennial celebration in 1987 and so the Chicago Public Library was designated the official repository for documents generated by the City. Archivists at the Library requested certain types of documents be kept and forwarded to the Library for processing (see “Chicago Millennium Collection Archive, 1999” box 1, folder 4). The types of documents requested were, amongst others, mission statements for each project, minutes of meetings, financial records, press releases, brochures or any other promotional materials, biographical information on participants, any video or audio recordings of events, and all public feedback after events. Due to the early cancellation of events for 2000, these files were transferred to Special Collections and Preservation Division in May 2000. Processing was complete in May 2002.

Access

Of the 178 countries that sent guests for the International Millennium Dinner, 120 have had copies of pages from guests’ passports separated and closed until 2052. Permission to view these documents before this date must be obtained in writing from the City of Chicago’s Freedom of Information office. Please see the archivist on duty for assistance.
